The soundtrack that started it all for them:

Here's the lyrics to their hit song: "Free"

Omnipresent phrase in my mind Spoken word I've said one million times Who are you to tell me it'll always be this way I close my eyes and I turn around And leave it all behind So free for the moment Lost somewhere between the earth and the sky So free for the moment Lost because I wanna be lost Don't try to find me Always try to breeze through my life Repetitious things I've done one million times Who are you to tell me that I'll always be this way I close my eyes and I turn around And leave it all behind What could I do It's not such a terrible thing What would you do It's not such a terrible thing So free for the moment Lost somewhere between the earth and the sky So free for the moment Lost because I wanna be lost So free for the moment Lost somewhere between the earth and the sky So free for the moment Lost because I wanna be lost Don't try to find me (repeat chorus)

This month's feature is:...

You may have recognized this group from the hit soundtrack of Empire Records. The soundtrack consultants where looking for fresh sounding hip music and obviously they got some of it from The Martinis! From the good bass lines with inspiring lyrics and with the lead singers voice sounding similar to Dolores of The Cranberries: it was only destined that their song "Free" off the soundtrack would become a hit! This along with the musical backround behind The Martinis started their career....

The Martinis are rumored to have formed in early 1994. Although their lead bass guitarist, Joey Santiago, was not new in the music bizz. He formaly was in the very popular Rock band of the '80's and early '90's' The Pixies! Joey and (I think) his wife Linda Malleria-Santiago (the lead singer) formed the band together. The sudden success of their song "Free" from the Empire Soundtrack sparked fans and critics. It topped Alternative charts in 1995! The Martinis as an unsigned band were able to rise their status some by getting on a soundtrack with bigger time Alternative groups such as: The Gin Blossoms, The Cranberries, Better Than Ezra, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Evan Dando (from The Lemonheads)! There is not much stuff out there on The Martinis, but that doesn't matter we all know they're a great band going somewhere someday!
