F-15C Eagle

As a fighter, the F-15 is hard to beat. Two powerful Pratt & Whitney turbofans push the big fighter skyward at two and a half times the speed of sound, and it can reach its normal operating ceiling of 59,000 feet in only two min.

In a fight, the Eagle's primary weapons are its four AMRAAM Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, which can destroy targets at up to 45 miles, well beyond visual range. The fighter aslo carries four AIM-9 Sidewinder heat-seeking missiles and a superfast-firing M61 Vulcan 20-mm cannon for close-quarter combat.

The Eagle can turn tightly and make abrupt maneuvers that would never have remotely possible in its predecessors. All-round pilot view from the high-set cockpit is superb, thanks to the large bubble canopy.

In spite of rivals to its position the F-15 remains the most successful air superiority fighter in service. Nearly 100 enemy aircraft have fallen to the F-15s, but no Eagle has ever been lost in aerial combat. It is an amazing record, which the big McDonnell Douglas fighter will carry on the front line well into the 21st century.
