Baker, founder, and L. B. (Bud) Maytag, longtime CEO of National Airlines; Curtiss H. Pitts, designer of the world-famed Pitts Special aerobatic airplanes; Kermit Weeks, aviation historian and founder of the aviation museum at Tamiami Airport that bears his name, and George E. Batchelor, a pioneer of the aircraft leasing industry and founder of the successful all-cargo Arrow Air, and Astronaut Frank Borman. -http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_1999_Sept_22/ai_55824375 (4/26/05) Lewis B. Maytag Jr., president of Miami-based National Airlines in 1962, predicted the company would offer supersonic service coast to coast by 2000, with planes moving so rapidly from Miami to Los Angeles that passengers, given time changes, would arrive before they left. Maytag also forecast his company would introduce ``silent jets,'' and remain ``a corporate entity, undevoured by mergers, the industry leader in aviation.'' National Airlines was swallowed up in 1980, when Pan American World Airways acquired its routes. Pan American filed for bankruptcy protection in 1991. -http://nucnews.net/nucnews/2000nn/0010nn/001024nn.htm (4/26/05) Frederick Lewis Maytag (1857 - 1937) started the Maytag Company. Hs son, Lewis B. Maytag, took over after him. His son, Lewis B. Maytag, Jr., owned FL and NA. -Internet (4/27/05) I flew with National and there is an article on Mr. Maytag, who was the youngest CEO of an airline of that era. When he became NA's CEO, after Mr. Baker retired who was the founder of National, he brought many of his top executives from Frontier. He turned our airline around, married two of our stewardesses, one that is a good friend of mine. He had innovative ideas, like hiring a great advertising firm in New York thus was born the most controversial slogan of any airline "Fly Me". -Suzanne "Sam" Johnson (8/15/05) OBITUARY Bud Maytag dies at 64. He was born in Rochester Minn,. ..was a pilot and founded Maytag Aircraft Corp., a Colorado Springs aircraft parts company. At 32 he took control of Frontier Airlines, and later bought Miami based National Airlines. He re-equipped National with B-727 and DC-8 jets and helped create the famous 'Fly Me' advertising campaign in 1972. He remained chairman of National until it was purchased by Pan American World Airways in 1980. -ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS on Sep 25, 1990 I went to work for Barney Foster in the Purchasing Dep't of Frontier in December of 1953. When Bud Maytag came on board in 1958 I became his secretary and also served as Assistant Corp. Secretary. As you know, he took all his management group to Miami in 1962 to run National Airlines and we were all there until PanAm came in 1980. I still keep in touch with some of my friends from the Frontier days and everyone enjoys the pictures and info on the websight and it brings back a lot of good memories. -Marian Wells Badgley (3/28/09) Posted at the FL Club: Subject: Updated memorial webpage BUD MAYTAG 1959 - 1962 PRESIDENT & OWNER DEN http://fal-1.tripod.com/Bud_Maytag.html About 6 more items added to FL's 3rd president's webpage. Post your remembrances. -Jake Lamkins (5/13/10) Remembrance of Bud Maytag L.B. "Bud" Maytag was thought to be aloof but I found him to be a kind and gracious man. My father was executive management at NAL and I was able to interact with him several times. When I worked in JAC for FAL in the summer of '75 he would fly into the airport and it was good to see the National logo Sunburst on the tail. Once he took me in his aircraft and did a low flyover up to Yellowstone and back to JAC. To this day, it is the neatest thing I've experienced in an aircraft. He was very concerned about a long strike that NAL was involved in and the hardships it was going to cause all the employees. In the fall of 1979 I was flying back to SLC on a Braniff MIA/DEN flight. Mr Maytag, his wife, and me were the only people in First Class. We had a festive and enjoyable time. Wisty was nice lady. My mom always said after an affair at the Maytag's how gracious a hostess she was. Mr Maytag used to tell my dad that he wanted the" JR." taken off his name. He finally did it. When FAL went into bankruptcy it was Mr Maytag who was the first person to call me and express his regrets and we ended up talking for over an hour about the last days leading up to Frontier's demise. It saddened him greatly. He believed the bankkruptcy could and should have been avoided. He sent me several First Day Issue stamped envelopes commemorating the international flights awarded to NAL with personal letters signed by him inside. I was saddened when he passed away at such an early age. I was glad he did not live to see PAN AM go bankrupt after all his hard work making National so successful. They had great routes out of MIA and PAN AM squandered a great opportunity merging with National. It was nice seeing the note by Marian Badgley. I did not know her but my dad spoke highly of her. I hope she is well and enjoying life. I will always remember his kindness to me and how comfortable he made me feel. He never complained (except about Evelyn Davis) and it is a pleasure to have known him. -Bob Higley, Estes Park CO (5/13/10) What a nice insight. Who was Evelyn Davis that you mentioned? -Jake Lamkins (5/13/10) Evelyn Davis is a gadfly. She owns one to a hundred shares of a stock and goes to board meetings and hassles the board. She used to go to NAL board meetings and call Mr. Maytag "Louie" and he took it and never said a negative thing to her. I knew if Mariam Badgley sees that it would get a laugh. She still does it and she lives at the Watergate in DC. -Bob Higley (5/13/10) Posted at FLacebook and the FL Club: FL President Bud Maytag's memorial webpage has been updated. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Bud_Maytag.html Four more items found. We were 29 years old and Bud Maytag lived just up the street. I would see him in the lounge all by himself dressed up and nursing a drink. I loved going over and introducing myself as a fan. He would always ask Billie and I to sit down with him and he always ordered drinks. It was always thrilling to hear him tell stories about Frontier; and especially National. It never failed he would pull out his wallet to show me he was Type Rated in the DC-8 plus DC-3 and Convair 340. He was a real gentleman. Those fellows are who we today but they all flew West. I just realized I told a family secret. We were hanging out at the Broadmoor with free drinks! Share if you want. -Rick Broome (7/2/23)
