Honey, Don't You Want A Man Like Me? By Frank Zappa From the album Läther Music copyright the ZFT Transcription by Manning Bartlett Tasmanian Zappa Consortium Manningb@tassie.net.au Notes: This one is almost straightforward. As it is pretty riff based, I haven't tabbed the whole thing out but instead shown each riff and given an indication of where to play it. There are a few variations and incidental bits which I have also tried to show. And of course there is "that" riff... Main Riff: This is a clavinet part, used during all of the choruses. ----------------------------------------------------||------------------ --------3-------5---------3-------5-----------------||------------------ --------5-------5---------5-------5-----------------||------------------ ------7---7-----7-------7---7-----7-----------------||------------------ ------------------9-----------------9---------------||------------------ ----------------------------------------------------||------------------ Here are two additional parts for the chorus. The first is a guitar riff that shows up in the second chorus onwards. The next is a xylophone riff that show up in the final chorus. These are on top of the clav riff above. Guitar Xylophone ----------------------||---------------------------||------------------- ----------------------||---5-7-5-5-----5-7-5-5-----||------------------- ----------------------||-----------5-----------5---||------------------- --7-7-7-4---7-7-7-4---||---------------------------||------------------- ----------------------||---------------------------||------------------- ----------------------||---------------------------||------------------- Verses: There are two main patterns for the verses. The first few use this pattern. he was the playboy type he smoked a pipe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --8---------------------------7----------------------------------------- --7---------------------------7----------------------------------------- --7---------------------------7----------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ his favourite phrase was out of sigh-ight (he had...) --------------------------------------------------x---------||---------- 5-----------------------------5-------7-----5-----x---------||---------- 7-----------------------------5-------7-----5-----x---------||---------- 7-----------------------------7-------7-----7-----x---------||---------- --------------------------------------------------x---------||---------- --------------------------------------------------x---------||---------- Here is the second riff for the verses - starting with "What a splendid sight". The final verse is a variation of this one (see below). Note that the first of each pair of bar chords uses a "Buddy Holly" type strumming - that slow slide across the strings thing. Listen, you'll hear what I mean. ------5-------7-------8----7-------5-------7-------8----7-----||-------- ------5-------7-------8----7-------5-------7-------8----7-----||-------- ------5-------7-------9----7-------5-------7-------9----7-----||-------- ------7-------9-------10---9-------7-------9-------10---9-----||-------- ------7-------9-------10---9-------7-------9-------10---9-----||-------- --5---5---5---7---8---8----7---5---5---5---7---8---8----7-----||-------- Incidental riff No. 1: OK, I expect a lot of you looked at this file just to get this fill. Good luck. I wrote it out using two handed tapping - I can't play it any other way at speed. ...the band was tight: -------t----------------t----------------t----------------t------------- 6-8-11-13-11-8---6-8-11-13-11-8---6-8-11-13-11-8---6-8-11-13---6-8-11--- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ t------t-----------t----------------t----------------t------------------ 13-6-8-13---6-8-11-13-11-8---6-8-11-13-11-8---6-8-11-13-11-8---6-8-11--- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ they did the 'bump' together... t--------t----t------------||------------------------------------------- 13---6-8-13-8-13-----------||------------------------------------------- ---------------------------||------------------------------------------- -----------------7---------||------------------------------------------- ---------------------------||------------------------------------------- ---------------------------||------------------------------------------- Incidental riff No. 2 Comes after "They saw a real hippie who delivered their dinner" --2-0-2---3-2-0-2---2-0-2---2-2-----------||---------------------------- --3-3-3---3-3-3-3---3-3-3---3-3-----------||---------------------------- --2-2-2---2-2-2-2---2-2-2---2-2-----------||---------------------------- 0---------0-------0---------0-0-----------||---------------------------- ------------------------------------------||---------------------------- ------------------------------------------||---------------------------- Incidental riff No. 3 For the "He took her home to a motor-court... bit" This is the bass-line being played... ----------------------------------------||------------------------------ ----------------------------------------||------------------------------ ------------5-4-2---------5-4-2---------||------------------------------ ----------2-------1-0---0---------------||------------------------------ ------0-------------------------1-------||------------------------------ ----------------------------------------||------------------------------ And here are the keyboard chords over the top of the previous bass-line. ------4-------4-------4-------4---||------------------------------------ --5---5---3---4---5---5---3---4---||------------------------------------ --5---5---5---5---5---5---5---5---||------------------------------------ --7---7---7---7---7---7---7---7---||------------------------------------ ----------------------------------||------------------------------------ ----------------------------------||------------------------------------ Final Verse: This is the "On the sofa she weeps..." verse. The initial chords are on a keyboard. The Jimi Hendrix quote is really cool (unnecessary commentary). ----12-----14---------15-----14-------12-----14------------------------- ----13-----15---------17-----15-------13-----15---------13---------13--- ----14-----16---------17-----16-------14-----16---------12---------12--- ----14-----16---------17-----16-------14-----16---------11---------11--- ----12-----14---------15-----14-------12-----14-----0-0----0---0-0------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ he just got in his car... ------------------|-----12-----14-------15-----14---||------------------ --------15p13-----|-----13-----15-------17-----15---||------------------ --------12--------|-----14-----16-------17-----16---||------------------ --------11--------|-----14-----16-------17-----16---||------------------ 0---0-0-------0---|-----12-----14-------15-----14---||------------------ ------------------|---------------------------------||------------------ That's pretty much it. Print this out and use your ears and I think you won't have any trouble figuring out which bit goes where. Cheers Manning
