The 1998 Combat Golf Championship may not be on the PGA Pro Tour, but some of the fine golfers pictured above have already signed up to play. The Combat Golf Championship, arguably the most prestigious event of its kind in the world, and the highlight of Combat Golf Association's tournament year, is being held once again at Melrose Country Club in Philadelphia, PA, on Friday, October 30, 1998. For the uninitiated, Combat Golf is both an event and a tradition, as much a test of physical endurance and commitment to the sport as it is a measure of shotmaking skill. We have played in the teeth of some of the most hostile weather conditions imaginable. Weather for the 1997 tournament was unusually mild, but 1996's cold rain and brisk winds provided memorable challenges as dozens of hardy sportsmen tackled Melrose's demanding and beautifully maintained course. It's called Combat Golf because on October 30, come hell or high water, we will play golf! Four trophies will again be awarded: The CGA Championship Trophy, The Lucky Luciano Low Net Trophy, The Lewis & Clark Expedition Trophy, and The Dreaded Stevie Wonder Cup (the horse's ass trophy shown above, presented to the player with the worst gross score). CGA trophies are perpetual awards. Each champion's name and score are inscribed for all time on the trophy. Each winner is honor-bound to display the trophy in a conspicuous place in home or office for a full year, and to return the trophy on the morning of the subsequent championship round. Essential information for 1998 includes: € Sixty dollar fee includes cart, morning coffee and donuts, and Open Menu Championship Brunch in the clubhouse. € Shotgun start precisely at 9:00 a.m. € All handicaps are determined according to the Modified Peoria System. € Cash prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin and for longest drive on selected holes. The tournament has grown each year but there's still plenty of room for golfers who have what it takes (specifically, 60 bucks, a set of clubs and some warm clothes). Call your reservation in now.
