Both of these meant much to our people, especially to our leaders, stewards and officers. They not only were effective, they were COST-effective -- in that we could have 12 of our leaders in classes at one time rather than sending 2 or 3 long distance for several days. The instruction was exceptionally good and the interaction was excellent. The local only spent about $110 on each session TOTAL. These "working lunches" were so effective, the thought struck me of organizing a "LABOR LAW SYMPOSIUM" in Fayetteville (since it's the home of the University of Arkansas with many resources). Initialing I contacted Jim Nickels, attorney for the AFL-CIO in Arkansas and a law professor at UALR. He suggested I contact the Law Education Program at UALR (Diane Thomas-Holladay, Dir.), which I did of recent. In response, she established a date UALR Law School could come up to Fayetteville to hold the Symposium: Saturday, September 18. Ms. Thomas-Holladay informed me that the Labor Law training from UALR was state supported and that there would be a minimal charge for each student attending. Then I worked on arranging the best accommodations at the best price. (There are no "unionized" facilities of any kind in NW Arkansas, by the way.) Hilton Hotel downtown off the Square offered the best deal.....and a lunch menu par excellent: Chicken Breast, Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes w/ Gravy, Rice Pilaf, Green Beans, Baby Carrots, Tossed Salad w/ Assorted Dressings, Hot Rolls & Butter, etc., etc. We also made arrangements with the Hilton to block off 15 rooms (at first) at the discounted rate of $75 a night. (Reservations must be made by August 5) If more rooms are needed, Hilton has promised to increase rooms available at that price. Hilton Hotel is located downtown Fayetteville right off the Square. It's a beautiful part of town near the University. Full packets will be mailed to all who register in advance and will include information brochures about sites to see in the area. We will be mailing out information packets about the Labor Law Symposium this week, which will include registration cards, etc. Inquiries about the Symposium have been coming in from all over the country. We may have to limit class size as a result of the unexpected interest. The new Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport is 40 miles from Fayetteville, quite a distance. Most flights into this area have connections through Dallas, Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago, or Atlanta. However, we now have information that Northwest KLM has flights from New York or New England to Memphis and the connecting flight (Airlink) still has service to Drake Field just 4 miles south of Hilton Hotel. Northwest's number is 1-800-225-2525. You might want to check that out. For those landing at the new Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, shuttles to Fayetteville cost $24 per person. If, however, there is a group of stewards from a local or locals, we will make arrangements to pick them up ourselves if they contact our local ahead of time. Thanks for your interest in being part of one of Fayetteville APWU's most exciting events. Send me your mailing address so Symposium packet can be mailed the good ol' fashioned way. Call (501) 521-0356 for more information or to make arrangements. Yours in solidarity, Loren Adams, President Fayetteville APWU Local 667
