PREZ REPORT 9/19/99 Labor Law Symposium Fayetteville, Arkansas - Hilton Hotel Saturday, September 18, 1999 The Labor Law Symposium, instructed by Diane Thomas-Holladay and Grainger Ledbetter of UALR Sat., Sept. 18th, was great! Information gathered from this class will be with us for years to come. Teaching was interesting -- right to the points. Interaction added sense of enthusiasm to the entire meeting. I hope we can bring the fruits of our study back to the workplace to have positive effect. Hilton Hotel did great job. Lunch was excellent; arrangements perfect. Downtown Fayetteville is comfortable, accommodating place to hold meetings. Special thanks to Diane Thomas-Holladay for excellent presentation and to Grainger Ledbetter, her assistant. Talk about hard work! Try standing in front of class for solid day with detailed, prepared lesson...... in front of struggle-hardened postal workers! It is demanding work! Thanks again, Diane! I'd like to thank Gini Hickman, Fayetteville Local Recording Secretary, for her work on Symposium. (She prepared cute nametags, banners, registration lists, financial arrangements, etc., etc.). Also thanks to Carolyn Kent, Vickie Alves, Jake Lamkins, George Wellinghoff, and other members of Fayetteville Local who assisted. Thanks to Jake for promoting Symposium on website and Fred Cusanelli who promoted it in newsletters. Thanks also to all Fayetteville members (leaders) who attended class & luncheon. I hope we gain lots from all this and can make the workplace better (our primary goal). Thanks go to Springfield MO Area Local who came out in force. What a fun bunch! They all wore matching shirts with Springfield APWU insignia; showed visible solidarity. (Brad, hope you got your sleep in!) Thank you, Ronald Himstead (MO APWU Prez), for your enjoyable fellowship and kind counsel the night before Symposium. Thanks also to Hot Springs, Arkansas Local, Ft. Smith Local (Western Ark. Area Local) and Little Rock (Central Ark. Area Local) who came out in mass. (Couldn't believe how many came out from each of these locals!) Thanks to Reco Colebrooke who came all the way from Tupelo, Mississippi! It was such a pleasure meeting him. We hope to develop a lifetime friendship. Thanks also to APWU leaders from Kansas City KS, Muskogee OK, Fort Worth TX, Springdale AR, Harrison AR, Tulsa OK, and Davenport IA for coming. Harrison (Brian Yurgill) is constantly on our minds for what they're suffering over there. Certificates from University of Arkansas at Little Rock - Labor Education Program were handed out to all who attended class (with provision of university credit under certain prerequisites). Labor leaders & stewards gathered from several states. It was not only "educational," but enjoyable and entertaining (the three "Es"). Information gleaned from study of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA - 1935) should contribute an added punch to our effectiveness as leaders. Thanks to ALL! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I.
