To the wide world, Geisel was less than a stranger - he was completely anonymous. Dr. Seuss, on the other hand, was known to all. Dr. Seuss wrote and illustraded children's books that sold more than 200 million copies in some 20 languages. he created characters as famous as any in arts and letters:the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Yertle the Tertle, the Grinch, the Lorax and many more.

Dr. Seuss lived his adult life quietly in LaJolla, California, on a mountaintop near the Pacific shore. But by nature, he was always the dry-wit New Englander. For he was not only born in the Bay State (MA.), but he attended college in New Hampshire. New England was, in fact, the first and last place where Ted Geisel existed only as Ted Geisel.

In the 1950's, Seuss began a one-Dr. battle against illiteracy. For beginning readers he created an overnight success,The Cat in the Hat, This children's book has a vocabulary of 220 words.

Best seller followed best seller; prize followed award. He was given an Oscar for the animated cartoon Gerald McBoing-Boing, ......emmys for Grinch Tv specials, and a Pulitzer citation. Generations devoured "Green Eggs and Ham" ("Sam! If you will let me be, I will try them. You will see").

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins and Yertel the Turtle. As Geisel remembered it, "i used the word burp, and nobody had ever burped before on the pages of a children's book. It took a decision from the president of the publishing house before my vulgar turtle was permitted to do so." The childless author eventualy lost interest in writing for grownups. He believed that "adults are obsolete children, and the Heck with them."
