The 1999 Big Day Out, was certainly the best Big Day Out ever in Auckland!!! 30 000 people were expected but an extra 5000 people managed to get into the grounds of Eccricson Stadium. The festival officially started at 11am, but hardly anyone got in by at least 11:30pm. The metservice said that it was supposed to rain for the whole day, instead the lovely sun came out and the humidity was at 90%.
The Feelers were scheduled to play at 3pm for an whole hour, and they certainly rocked the place!!! The crowd were certainly having a brilliant time, and almost everyone knew the lyrics to most of the songs. James was wearing a brownish boiler suit and sung brilliantly, Matt was wearing a black shirt and shorts, dyed his hair red which looked really wicked and did an excellent bass set, while Hamish was behind the drums, drumming away like there was no tomorrow!!! To quote Julia "the phantom feeler" was there too (Tim). The guys played several songs, from the ‘Supersystem’ and a few b-sides. Just to mention a few: Space Cadet, Supersystem, Pressure Man, Friend, Venus (which everyone knew the words to, and sung along with James) Albino, Honey God and Pull the Strings. The BDO review in the NZ Herald awarded James as "Best impressionist as an Native American" for the little dance he did during Pull the Strings. That was quite a site!!
After the guy’s performance they apparently were signing autographs at a tent a few meters away from the stage, and a few devoted fans (from the list ) managed to get to talk to the guys, but as for myself I and Julia we didn’t get anywhere near the tent because the queues were TOO long!!! Overall the day was EXCELLENT, probably the best part of the day was when the Feelers came on!! Hopefully the guys will play at the Big Day Out next year??
As for the rest of the day’s acts: Ash, Hole (a brilliant performance) Stellar, Shihad, Fat Boy Slim, Sean Lennon. HLAH, Dead Flowers, The Living End, Bic Runga, and 50 other bands played including Marilyn Mansen who did quite a stunning performance!!!
