Songs of the Musketeers

The songs on this page were taken from an issue of "Song Hits" magazine that was published in March of 1939. They were used in the movie "THE THREE MUSKETEERS" starring Don Ameche as D'Artagnan. Fencer Girl suspects that since the songs are 60 years old, the copyright police are not too likely to come after her but please do be mindful that these songs are truly the property of the authors or their heirs and that they are used here only to entertain and for no commercial purposes.

Fencer Girl has actually read the novel THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Alexander Dumas (not just the Cliff's Notes) and she finds it hard to imagine Dumas' musketeers singing such lyrics as these but there was a lot of singing in 1930s movies and so, 20th Century Fox's musketeers were tuneful fellows.

NOTE: If you find some of the spellings and punctuation, um, interesting, they are exactly as printed in the magazine. Fencer Girl took no liberties with them.

VIOLA

By Walter Bullock and Sam Pokrass

Oh, Viola, Viola, Viola, Viola, Viola!
There are girls in old Paree.
Viola, Viola, Viola, Viola, Viola
And the wine is flowing free
So, Hola, Hola, Hola, Hola, Hola!
Get along my sweet Cherie!
To the city that is never melancholie,
Where the girls are very, very, very, very jolie,
Singing Viola, Viola, Viola, Viola, Viola,
C'est Paree!

ON THE BRIDGE AT AVIGNON

By Jonny Graff and Gene Batou

Soor Le Pon D'A-vee-non that's the place
to find your romance.
Soor Le Pon D'A-vee-non
Come along and take a chance
wait until the moon's bright
Wait for just the right night
Soor Le Pon D'A-vee-non
Ten to one you'll find a romance
Soor Le Pon D'A-vee-non
Come along and take a chance

SONG OF THE MUSKETEERS

By Walter Bullock and Sam Pokrass

We're King's musketeers on parade, comrades strong!
We're marching along.
/P> We're King's musketeers unafraid fighting at the drop of a hat!
Here's to fate,
Here's to chance,
Here's to life and romance.
It's one for all and it's all for one,
And it's "Vi Ve-La France!"
We're musketeers, So beware!
If we live or we die,
Who's to care?
C'est La Vie.
C'est L'a-mour, C'est La Guerre!
We're musketeers!

MY LADY (D'Artagnan/s Serenade)

By Walter Bullock and Sam Pokrass

I'd love to sing a song to you, my lady:
To woo you as the poets do, my lady.
A tender word, a pretty rhyme,
A well turned phrase and I would have a song sublime to sing your praise.
And if my song could make you say you love me,
Then heaven would be bright above me.
With words and music straight from my heart,
My song would tell my love for you, my lady.
Tra, la, la, I would sing of your lips and your hair.
Tra, la, la, I would sing of your beauty so rare.
Tra, la, la, I believe that I've got something there, my sweet, fair.
And if my song could make you say you love me,
Then heaven would be bright above me.
With words and music straight from my heart,
My song would tell my love for you, my lady.
