DANIEL BOONE, Army Teamster, Rowan Co. North Carolina Militia assigned to British Major General Edward Braddock commanding two Regiments of Regulars with American Militia commanded by Col George Washington. Present at “Braddock’s Defeat” of Jul 9, 1755 when the column was overwhelmed by a force of French and native Americans near Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) PA. Enlisted in early 1755; discharged in late summer 1755. In 1775 Daniel Boone blazed the famous Wilderness Trail and led the first settlers into Kentucky and founded Boonesboro. (Brother-in-law of 1st cousin seven times removed to Marilyn Haase Forcum, wife of Jim Forcum)

AMERICAN REVOLUTION:
JOHN FORCUM, Pvt., Continental Army, Enlisted Jan 26, 1776, Capt Nathan Adam's Company, Delaware Regiment of Continental Troops commanded by Col. John Haslet. Also known as the "Delaware Blue Hen Chickens". In barracks at Dover, DE on Apr 12, 1776. The regiment was engaged in numerous Battles during the American Revolution.
NINIAN RILEY, while living in Montgomery Co., MD he provided supplies to the Continental Army during the Revolution. He signed the Oath of Fidelity and Allegiance to the State of Maryland. After the War he migrated to Yadkin Co., NC about 1780. He was the father-in-law of Isaac Windsor, below.
JOHN VAN CLEVE, of Col Morgan's Riflemen; Engaged in Battle of Monmouth (NJ) Jun, 28, 1778. Also served with General Forman in the Battle of Germantown. Killed by Shawnee Indians Jun 1, 1791 in Cincinnati, OH
ISAAC WINDSOR, of Montgomery Co. MD, served in the 3rd Co., Middle Battalion on Sep 4, 1777 and the 2nd Battalion in July of 1780. . He signed the Oath of Fidelity and Allegiance to the State of Maryland in 1778. He brought his small family to Yadkin Co. NC in the spring of 1783. His father-in-law was Ninian Riley.
NORTHWEST TERRITORY INDIAN WARS:
BENJAMIN VAN CLEVE, Independent Quartermaster Corp., U.S.A; Aug 8, 1791 through 27 Dec 1794. Actively engaged in Gen Arthur St. Clair's disastrous defeat on the Wabash River, of Nov 3, 1791, by the Miami Indians under Chief Little Turtle and Shawnee Indians under Chief Blue Jacket. (Of the 920 engaged, 264 were wounded and 632 were killed, plus 200 camp followers were killed). Command Headquarters was at Fort Washington, Cincinnati, OH.

WILLIAM FORCUM, Delaware Militia, 5th Company of Infantry under Capt Wallace detached from the 5th Regiment, 3rd Company. 1812-1816.
WILLIAM VAN CLEVE, Capt., Co A, Dayton Riflemen Ohio Militia. William raised Co A, also known as "Van Cleve's Co", in response to a call to arms by the Ohio Governor. Was attached to the Northwestern Army, first under the command of Gen Hull and then under Gen W. H. Harrison. On May 26, 1812 was ordered to march to the frontier to the west of the Miami River where he lead continual skirmishes with the Shawnee Indians. By Dec 1, 1813 most companies had returned to Dayton, OH and been discharged.

MATHEW FORKUM, Pvt., United States Army (First Seminole War 1817-1819; Second Seminole War 1835-1842; and Third Seminole War 1855-1858)
BLACK HAWK WAR of 1832:
ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Capt, U.S.A. Militia, 4th Regiment of Mounted Volunteers, of Gen. Samuel Whiteside's Brigade. Enlisted April 21, 1832. Discharged at Fort Johnson (Ottawa) on May 27, 1832. Lincoln re-enlisted on the same day he mustered out of his old company, and was mustered in on May 29 as a Private in Captain Elijah Ises' Company, Twenty-Day Interim Regiment. On June 16, Lincoln was mustered out again. Lincoln's third enlistment was as a Private in Captain Jacob M. Early's "Spy Company." This unit mustered in approximately June 20, 1832. He was mustered out and discharged on July 10, 1832 near present-day Coldspring, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Mr. Lincoln later became the 16th President of these United States (Third cousin, eight times removed to Marilyn Haase Forcum, wife of Jim Forcum)

JESSE LEE FORCUM, Pvt., C.S.A., Co A 33rd Regiment of North Carolina Troops, Enlisted Mar 5, l862 Iredell Co, NC. Discharged Mar 28, l862. Twin brother of Thomas Marshall Forcum. Said to have been sent home due to the lack of rifles available to enlistees in the spring of 1862. Family tradition holds that Jesse Lee enlisted thereafter in another regiment, whose records were lost

JOHN BURGESS FORCUM, Capt., C.S.A., Co H, 4th Regiment of North Carolina Troops, Brig General W.R. Cox's Brigade. Enlisted May 16 1861 Iredell Co, NC. Wounded in Battle of Gettysburg on Jul 1, l863. Discharged Appomattox Court House Apr 9, l865. Capt Forcum was in every engagement that the Army of Northern Virginia fought during the war. Capt Forcum was in command of the regiment (4th NC) at the time of Lee's surrender. After the war, he moved to Montezuma, IA, with his brother William, (below) and raised a large family. In old age he moved to Chico (City), Butte Co., CA where he passed away 20 Sep 1920.
BAZEL W. FORCUM, Pvt., C.S.A., Co H, 4th Regiment of North Carolina Troops. Enlisted Mar 1, l862 Iredell Co, NC. Died Jun 30 or Jul 16, l862. The Seven Days Battles took place Jun 12 - 1 Jul 1862.
THOMAS E. FORCUM, Pvt., C.S.A., Co H, 4th Regiment of North Carolina Troops. Enlisted Jun 13, 1861, Iredell Co, NC. Captured at Battle of South Mountain, MD Sep 14, l862 and exchanged Nov 10, l862. Died at Richmond Virginia hospital Nov 26, l862.
WILLIAM WRIGHT FORCUM, Pvt., C.S.A., Co H, 4th Regiment of North Carolina Troops. Enlisted Jun 13, l861, Iredell Co, NC. Wounded in Battle of Chancellorsville, VA May 3, l863. Recorded as killed at Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA in the Bloody Angle on May 12, l864. But he wasn't killed, and was a Prisoner of War at Camp Douglas. He shows up again as Wright W. Forcum in Co. B, Mallett's Battalion (Camp Guard), in NC. Immediately after the war he moved to Montezuma, IA, where he raised a large family and died in 1902.

JAMES A. FORCUM, Pvt., C.S.A., Co. H, 23rd Regiment of Tennessee Infantry (Martin’s Regiment)
JAMES A. FORCUM, Pvt., C.S.A, Co. H, 18th Regiment of Tennessee Troops. The 18th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee, in June, 1861, and in July had 883 men present for duty. Its members were raised in the counties of Cannon, Sumner, Davidson, Rutherford, Cheatham, Wilson, and Bedford. The unit moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, then Fort Donelson where it was captured in February 1862 and then exchanged. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta and returned to Tennessee with Hood, but it was not engaged at Franklin and Nashville. Later it was involved in the North Carolina Campaign. The regiment lost thirty-one percent of the 430 at Murfreesboro, and forty-one percent of the 330 at Chickamauga and sustained many losses at Atlanta. Later the 18th was consolidated with the 3rd Volunteers into the 23rd Regiment of Tennessee Infantry, and on December 21, 1864, there were 12 men fit for duty. It was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865

In the book, "Mary Ruth Memories of Mobile," Lowell L. Getz writes: On the night of 16 August 1944 the primary target was the Siebel aircraft factories at Halle, Germany, 20 miles northwest of Leipzig. About an hour from the primary target the Bomb Group ran into a hornets nest of antiaircraft fire and German fighters. He writes, "Two Me 109s came in at the No. 3 plane, No. 116, "Hi Ho Silver", in the Second Element, with 1Lt William I. Eblen in the left seat. The first fighter came directly at the tail position from 0600 O'clock level. The tail gunner, S/Sgt Charles D. Forcum, opened fire on the attacking Me 109 at 600 yards, firing about 400 rounds at him as he closed in on "Hi Ho Silver." Smoke began streaming from the cockpit and the prop stopped dead when the fighter was about 75 yards from the tail of "Hi Ho Silver." The cowling ripped off and the fighter immediately dropped under the bomber and went into a straight-down dive. Thirty seconds later another Me 109 ..." was attacking. - by the end of the mission six of thirty-six aircraft sent over Germany were lost and one was left as salvage on the airbase at Boreham. Three of the four new crews that were on the mission were lost. Thirty-one crewmen were killed. Twenty-five became prisoners of war. All losses were from the 324th Squadron. JACK NEWELL FORCUM, Machinists Mate 2nd Class, U. S. Navy. Served on the U.S.S. Purdy, a DD 734 class destroyer, from 1944-1946. The Purdy supported the invasion of Okinawa in 1945. On 12 April 1945 the Purdy and one other destroyer were attacked by 30 Japanese planes, most of which were Kamikaze. The Purdy was credited with positive destruction of 3 additional planes, criss-crossing friendly fighter and splashing suiciders in the melee of violent action. The lone surviving suicider made a run on Purdy under fire of friendly fighters and all available weapons on Purdy and was finally knocked down 25 yards from the ship; unfortunately its momentum caused it to ricochet into the starboard side. The bomb broke loose, pierced the side of the ship, and exploded internally causing serious damage to vital instruments and destruction of several compartments. A total of 1 Officer and 14 Enlisted men were killed and an additional 25 Enlisted personnel were injured. After the damage was received, causalities to essential equipment were restored sufficiently to permit Purdy to proceed under her own power to Kerama Retto for repairs. During the action off Okinawa, the Purdy acquitted herself gallantly. For her splendid performance she was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation.
