Mickey Mouse was the very first Character that Walt Disney ever got to put
in theatres that everyone in America knew about. Before Mickey walt
Disney came up with Oswald the lucky rabbit. He sold the Oswald cartoons
to someone who took the character. From then on he decided to make sure
he owned his characters. Then Mickey came along !!!

Mickey was created on a train ride by Walt Disney. Walt Disney first named
him Mortimur. His wife thought that that name wasn't right so she gave him
the name Mickey. Thanks to her, Mickey is Mickey and not Mortimur. Mickey
caught on fast. Here is an In depth look at his life.

In the 20’s he did a lot. His first movie was called “Plane Crazy”, it
came out in 1228. He was also in the very first cartoon with sound. It was
called “Steamboat Willie”. It was what really started his success in movies.
Everybody wanted to see him after that.

By the 30’s he was the most popular character in the world. He was so
popular that they gave him his first Oscar in 1932. It also made Walt Disney
add 3 new characters to the gang. Instead of just Mickey and Minnie, there was
also Pluto, Goofy, & Donald. Mickey made many films in the 30’s, but he also
was a popular star of comic strips.

In the 40’s he was bigger than they thought he would ever turn out to be!
He was so big that they had to make a bigger animation studio in Burbank, CA
to produce his cartoons. Mickey was hard at work making Fantasia in 1940. When
WWII hit he helped the war effort a lot. He was on advertisements for war bonds,
cartoons about the war, and hope to people who had family off at war. He was very
helpful to his country.

By the time the 50’s came he was part of the newest TV show for kids, the
“Mickey Mouse Club.” He became an international star. He was called Topolino in
Italy, Micky Maus in Germany, Mi Lao Shu in China, and Musse Pigg in Sweden. In
good old America he opened Disneyland in Southern California.

By the 60’s & 70’s he was still popular. One sad thing about that time in his
life was the death of Walt Disney in 1966. That didn’t stop him, he helped open
Disney World in 1971. On November 13, 1978 he became the first cartoon to have a
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was his 50th birthday.

When it got to be the 80’s & 90’s he was still as big as he was in the 30’s. He
starred in Walt Disney’s World on Ice and helped launch the Disney Channel. His last
major film was the Prince and the Pauper in 1990. In 1994 he was again moved to
another animation studio and made a cartoon short in 1995 called Mickey’s Runaway
Brain.

He is still here today. He will keep on going and probably never stop. He will
remain in everyone's hearts and minds for years to come. If we’re lucky he’ll keep
on making movies.
