"Hear O' Israel, HaShem is our G-d, HaShem alone"

Zechariah 12:10

The missionaries will say that Zechariah 12:10 "proves" that the Messiah is to be pierced. Their translation, usually the King James Version, has this verse say "And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn." They will then show you John 19:37 where Jesus was said to have been pierced. This, they say, "proves" Jesus is the Messiah.

The Reply is:This is a mistranslation. The verse should read "But I will fill the House of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem with a spirit of pity and compassion; they shall lament to Me about those who are slain, wailing over them as over a favorite son and showing bitter grief as over a first-born" (JPS) Notice that the nation (see verse 12), and all of Jerusalem is portrayed as morning greatly, something the New Testement does not say of Jesus. In fact, the New Testament portrays the Jewish people as anything but compassionate and mournfull over Jesus' death.

Also read this from the beginning of verse 7, which says (JPS): " The L-rd will give victory to the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the House of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not be too great for Judah." Verse 9 reads "In that day I will all but annihilate all the nations that came up against Jerusalem." This is refering to "nations" being destroyed. No nations were destroyed in the lifetime of Jesus. This is not about Jesus. Verse 8 tells us that "In that day, the L-Rd will shield the inhabitents of Jerusalem..." Only 40 years after Jesus died, Jerusalem was torched by the Romans, and the inhabitants expelled. So much for Jesus fulfilling this prophecy.
