Age Cleared Up. Another point about Baldwin that Mr. Bach had cleared up in preparation for the trial was that of his age. Baldwin was born on June 27, 1850 and was, therefore, not quite 58 years old at the time of his death. When he was charged with the offense that finally led to the quadruple killing he said, for an obvious reason, that he was 68 years old. This bit of information Mr. Bach obtained from a policy taken out in the Court of Honor by Baldwin, which gave the date of his birth and included the statement that there was "no insanity in his family." Wrote Letter in December. After Baldwin had committed his atrocious crime a letter addressed to Mrs. Emma Grau, his daughter, undated, and with the request to "please open" was secured by Mr. Bach. According to the testimony of another daughter, Bee Baldwin, it had been written on December 31. In view of the fact that it opens another light on the case, this letter is of interest and is reproduced below. Barring mistakes in spelling, it reads as follows: "Dear Children: I want you to be good to one and another for my sake. I love you all. Now, I will tell you what to do. I give piano and my picture and Mama's and Clevies and Netties to Hattie and Bee and they are to have their bedding and bedclothes. And all the rest of the stuff to be divided equal between you all. Now I have divided what I had as near equal as I know how and if Bee and Hattie wants to try and keep house let them have the house to live in and rent the other houses and divide it up, keep the taxes up on them and when Hattie becomes of age sell all of them and divide it equal. I will leave money to bury me decent and to keep the graves up and Emma can see to it. And one more request, I want to be buried in the clothes I got on, for poor wife picked them out for me. I am glad I am going to her and Clovie. So don't grieve for me for I am happy to think I will soon be by my dear loved ones. I know the blessed Lord and His Christ will forgive me. Good bye to all. Hope we may all meet again. Your Father, "THOMAS BALDWIN." Below the body of the letter is word "goodbye" again and six crosses. ________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Court Met pursuant to adjournment Court adjourned until Saturday.
