WALLACE - Lieutenant Augustus Robert - 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regt.
Accidently killed by the explosion of a mine at Zeerust. 13th January 1901. Aged 29. Born January 1872.

WALLACE - 2nd Lieutenant Aylmer Willoughby - 2nd King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
Died of enteric onboard SS Dunera. 9th October 1901. Aged 21. Son of Colonel N.W. Wallace (late King's Royal Rifle Corps. Commanding 4th County of London (King's Colonials) Imperial Yeomanry). Born February 1880. He was being invalided home with a broken leg when he died of enteric.

Killed in action at Tweefontein, 25th December 1901, serving with 11th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Aged 19. Son of Ernest and Hattie Watney. Born March 1882. He was buried near the battlefield, but his remains were moved to Harrismith cemetery in 1958-1959.

Buried at Magersfontein.

Died of enteric at Netly Hospital. 3rd April 1901 Aged 24. Son of Major Sidney James Waudby. Born 9th March 1876.

WAY - Lieutenant Arthur Strachan, D.S.O. - 2nd Durham Light Infantry
Killed in action at Tabaksberg 29th January 1901. Aged 24. Son of Rev. W.H. Bromley Way, late rector of Warboys, Hants. Born 5th March 1876. Served with the DLI Company, Burmah Mounted Infantry. Awarded DSO 1901 and QSA and 5 clasps.

WEBSTER - Captain Godfrey Vassall George Frederick Charles - Bethune's M.I.
Killed in a railway accident at Bethulie 1st February 1901. Aged 28. Son of Sir Augustus Frederick Webster.

WEBSTER - Lieutenant Leveret Beverley - 1st Royal Lancaster Regt.
Died in London after being invalided from Natal 22nd March 1902. Aged 23. Son of Barclay Webster, of Kentville, Nova Scotia. Born September 1878. Buried in Canada.

Wounded near Bothaville, 6th November 1900. Died 10th November. Aged 35. Son of John D. Welch, of Herne Hill, Surrey. Born July 1865. Served in Burma 1887 (medal and bar), and the Niger 1897-8 (MID).

WELDON - Captain George Anthony - 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers
Killed in action at Talana Hill 20th October 1899. Aged 33. Son of Colonel Thomas Weldon, CIE and Helen Simpson. Educated at Cheltenham College. Served in Burma 1887-9 (medal and bar). Captain Weldon was the first officer killed in the Boer War. He was buried at Dundee.

WELLFORD - Captain Francis, M.B. - 7th Batt. Imperial Yeomanry
Wounded at Vlakfontein and died two days later, on the 1st June 1901. Aged 38. Son of Rev. John Francis Wellford, of Oakland, Sidmouth. Born at Clevedon, April 1863. Doctor at Guy's Hospital 1887-92. Went to New South Wales and practised in Sydney. He was medical officer at Winton District Hospital, Queensland 1893-95. From 1895-99 he was in the Straits Settlements. Joined the I.Y. in 1900. He was a fellow of the Royal Colonial Institue.
Memorial at St. Mary's Cathedral, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - "In Memoriam Francis Wellford of Riverside Estate, Kuala Selangor, Surgeon 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry died of wounds after the battle of Vlakfontein, S. Africa, 29th May 1901, Aged 38."

WELLBY - Captain Montagu Sinclair - 18th Hussars
Wounded at Mertzicht, 30th July 1900. Died at Paardekop, 5th August. Aged 33. Son of John Henry Wellby, of London. Born October 1866. Served at Tochi 1897 (medal and bar). Buried at Zandspruit.

WEST - 2nd Lieutenant Archibald Vivian - 2nd Royal Berkshire Regt.

Killed in action at Rensburg 1st January 1900. Aged 23. Son of Lieut-Colonel Frederick West, grandson of Admiral Sir John West, GCB. Born June 1876. Enlisted as a private in 1893 and was commissioned in 1898.

Wounded at Heidleberg, 23rd June 1900. Died the next day. Served in the Galeka and Gaika wars, Bechuanaland expedition and Matabele war. A fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute.

WHITE - Lieutenant Robert James Little - 'C' company, New South Wales Imperial Bushmen
Born at Condobolin, New South Wales, 22 October 1878, son of John White.
Killed in action at Wonderfontein, 12th September 1900.  Buried at Lichtenberg Municipal Cemetery.
Memorial at St. Enoch's Presbyterian Church, Newtown, Sydney - "In memoriam Lieutenant Robert J.L. White, N S. Imperial Bushmen, killed in action at Wondersfontein, South Africa, whilst leading his troops on September 12, 1900, Aged 22 years. Erected by his young men friends. "

"Lieutenant White was treacherously shot ... while going to answer the white flag displayed by the Boers. He was the pet of the Bushmen's Corp.  "We all loved him, and will avenge him," are his men's own words.  Colonel Mackay, the commanding officer of the Bushmen, is his brother-in-law.  At the funeral his comrades replaced their hats on their heads, and joined hands together and swore most solemnly never again to recognise the white flag."

WHITEHEAD - Lieutenant James Allan - 5th Manchester Regt.
Died of enteric at Heilbron 28th May 1902. Aged 18. He was wounded 3 times and died while serving with the 28th Company, Army Service Corps. QSA and 5 bars.

WHITEHEAD - Major Randolph Edward - 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers
Killed in action at Doornfontein 13th January 1902. Aged 40. Son of Rev. Thomas Whitehead, vicar of Shustoke, Warwickshire. Born June 1861. Killed when leading his company (only 80 stong) in a bayonet charge against a ridge held by 400 Boers. Major Whitehead fell about 50 yards from the ridge, but the Boers were driven out of their position.

WICKHAM - Captain Edward David Provis - 84th Co. 22nd Batt. Imperial Yeomanry
Killed in action at Doorn River 16th October 1901. Aged 43. Son of Lieut-Colonel Thomas Wickham (33rd Foot), of Fronwion, North Wales (died in Cheltenham 3rd April 1903). Born in 1857. Educated at Cheltenham College. Served as a trooper in the I.Y. and was commissioned March 1901.

Wounded 7th March 1902, near Tweebosch. Died the next day. Aged 60. Son of Richard Bassett Wilson, of Cliffe Hall, Piercebridge, Darligton. Born 1841. Educated at Cheltenham College. Awarded the CB in 1897. His brother (below) and son (Lieut. Richard Wilson) were killed in the Boer War.

WILTSHIRE - Captain Joseph Herbert - Reserve of Officers
Killed in action at Kaffir Kop 4th October 1900. Aged 45. Born January 1855. Served 11 years in the ranks (20th Hussars). Commissioned in 1886. Served in Egypt 1882 (medal and bar, Khedives star), and Sudan 1889 (bar). Attached to Mounted Infantry Company, Lincolnshire Regt. when killed.

"To the glory of God and in loving remembrance of Capt. Joseph Herbert Wiltshire late 20th Hussars Killed in action while serving with the 7th Mounted Infantry near Lindley S. Africa Oct. 4th 1900 aged 46. He also served in the Egyptian War 1882 being present at engagements at Mahsameh, Kassassin, Tel-el-kebir and Toski he was General Secretary of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers and mainly through his efforts the old bells of this church were rehung and two new ones added. This tablet is placed here by his sorrowing widow and friends as a mark of appreciation of his work and noble character."

WOOD - Lieutenant Charles Carroll - 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regt.
Died of wounds at Belmont 10th November 1899. Aged 23. Son of J. Taylor Wood (a Captain in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War) and great grandson of Zachary Taylor, President of the United States of America. Born March 1876.

Killed in action at Weltevreden, near Zeerust. 20th October 1900. Aged 33. Son of Edward Wood, of Culmington Manor, Shropshire. Born 1866.

WOOD - 2nd Lieutenant Hugh Maurice - 1st Royal Sussex Regt.
Died of illness at Springfontein 3rd May 1902. Aged 22. Son of Thomas Archibald Wood, of Eliot Park, Blackheath. Had served with the Cape Monuted Rifles, commissioned in July 1901.

WOOD - Colonel Oswald Gillespie, C.B. - Royal Army Medical Corps
Died of illness at Kroonstad 3rd January 1902. Aged 50. Born November 1851. Entered the Medical Staff 1873. Served in Egypt 1882 (bar and medal, Khedives star). Served as Principal Medical Officer at Kroonstad. Awarded C.B. in 1900. His wife was a nurse in the Army Nursing Service. She was Superintending Sister at H Redoubt, Suakin, Egypt in 1885 (RRC, medal and Khedive's Star) and served in Cairo 1889-91. She volunteered for South Africa and died at Kroonstad 4th October 1901. They left two small sons.

WOODGATE - Major-General Sir Edward Robert Prevost, K.C.M.G., C.B.
Wounded at Spion Kop, 24th January 1900. Died at Mooi River, 23rd March. Aged 54. Son of Rev. H.A. Woodgate, rector of Belbroughton, Worcestershire. Born November 1845. Entered the 4th Foot in 1865. Served in Abyssinia 1868 (medal), Ashanti 1873-4 (medal and bar, MID), Zululand 1879 (medal and bar, MID), Sierra Leone 1898 (MID, C.M.G). Made a C.B. in 1896 and K.C.M.G. in 1900. Commanded the 9th Brigade of the 5th Division.

WOODGATE - Lieutenant William Ernest Streatfield - 2nd Royal Lancaster Regt.
Wounded at Vryheid, 11th December 1900. Died the following day. Aged 23. Son of Ernest Woodgate, of Rochester. Born November 1877.

Wounded at Vrede, 10th November 1900. Died the following day. Aged 20. Son of Major S.H. Woodhouse, of Norley Hall, Cheshire and Heatherton Park, Taunton. Born December 1879. Buried in the churchyard at Vrede.

Killed in action at Diamond Hill 11th June 1900. Aged 26. Son of Charles Booth E. Wright, of Bolton Hall, Yorkshire. Born December 1873.
Memorial in Northampton Cathedral - "To the Glory of God and in memory of Brave Men, inhabitants of this County and neighbourhood, who gave their lives for their Sovereign and Country during the War in South Africa 1899-1902, the Western Window of this Cathedral was filled with stained glass, AD 1903 .... 12th (Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers, Lieut. G.C. de C. Wright."
