He married twice, Sarah Fine Shaw and second wife Thessalonia Annie Elizabeth Shaw. Sarah and Tessies parents were Dr. Robert L. Shaw and Lou J. or Lon J. ? according to the 1880 census. They also had another sister Louisa Macedonia Shaw married to Dr. Harlan Richards.

Talbert and Tessie were married at the home of Dr. Harlan Richards in Adair Co. Ky. on November 19, 1881. Certificate lists a John W. Shaw.
