MOLLY CARTWELL

Molly Cartwell......

Where *do* I begin?

Well, I'll begin by taking a quote from the everwise JH.....

Molly doesn't quite get the same mount of respect that Laurie or Jamie or Rachel get. I don't hear much criticism from other fans, but I don't hear any praise, either. She doesn't even get compared to Kara, who is more popular. Maybe it's because Molly's character is still fresh in our minds. She doesn't have a history like Laurie, didn't have as much at stake like Rachel and Kara, and wasn't labeled a top priority like Jamie. She isn't as grossly intolerable as Tina, who will be Halloween's Pauly Shore, an unbearable persona that is treated with incredible contempt by fans of all ages. Tolerable, yes. Charismatic or inspiring? That would be questionable. Molly is a dressing, a flavor to top off a chef salad, not entirely important but appealing to the eyes. I can't say much bad about her, but John's character outweighs hers in importance to the story. I'm sure it was Michelle's affiliation with Dawson's Creek that got her the role and allowed her to live, be in the background as a minor scream queen, etc. So why doesn't she get elevated to legendary status? To be an equal to other Halloween heroines? For one, her character doesn't get that opportunity. Another reason, she takes on the role of an unprivileged child, but she just oozes with the image of "rich snob". Maybe it's just the eyebrows, but she constantly gives the image of a cheerleader who wouldn't give non-football players the time of day. It seems she merely provides a "babe factor" to draw a stronger male presence to movie theaters (I would be lying if I said I didn't drool even a little bit when she was onscreen)

Molly Cartwell symbolizes the dull thump we all feel when hitting our heads on a door, or the dull headache we get when we sleep in too long. She didn't contribute anything to Halloween: H20. She was basically "Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma'am, Along for the Ride."

Now don't get me wrong, she's nowhere near as bad as the Terrible Tina, but in the long-run she's pretty annoying. She clichés the smart-yet-ditzy, pretty-yet-modest girl we've seen all too many times in movies.

But did you really leave the theater thinking 'Wow! That Molly was one helluva character!' I doubt it. I, for the most part, want to snooze when I see the non-active Molly walking around like a zombie when she should be acting human! How did Molly find her way to getting her pic placed on the H20 cover? She didn't contribute that much other than throw a rock at Michael (wimp).

But Where, oh where, should I place the blame? The script? Well, as an actress myself I can tell you that blaming a script for your character can only go so far. The actor is supposed to take what is given to him/her, and make it something special. Michelle Williams did not do this, in my opinion. So should I blame the actress? Perhaps. I've actually made myself watch Dawson's Creek, and surprisingly Michelle's character on the show isn't acted AS BAD as Molly.....so I guess the credit for the dull-to-boot Ms. Cartwell must be awarded to Michelle. :)

I mean....Josh Hartnett, Sarah Lynn O'Keef, Adam Hann-Byrd....heck, even Joseph Gordon-Levitt did admirable jobs given the fact that their characters were also vague and shoddily written. They created a special persona and incorporated it into their character. While watching H20 you really got a feeling for them all....but not Molly. She's just along for the ride. Besides her looks I must wonder what John Tate saw in this sleepy girl!

But I digress...sufficely to say that if there's ever a sequel to H20 we'll probably see "vivacious" Molly again.....but here's hoping we wont.

And NOW it's time for my favorite game......

Image Three

In this image we see Molly right after following that map, running into John, and now is exploring the Halloween-decorated room which will be the scene of her and her friends' Halloween party later that night.

.

The logical conclusion would be that her face should reflect wonderment as she explores this room, seeing how much effort John put into making it. Also, a bit of contentment as she now knows her relationship with John is cemented.

But what does her face reflect?

Image Four

Here we see Molly right after she discovers that her father will not give her money to go to Yosemite National Park.

.

It's obvious Molly is going through inner-turmoul, followed by a helpless sense of despair that she might always be broke, cheap, and ultimately trailer trash material.
