Chapter 11: Phone Call

My door creaked open and daylight shone through. I squinted my eyes as I blocked the incoming light with my hand.

“I was just checking to see if you were awake dear,” my mother’s head poked into my bedroom.

“I am now,” I groaned as I rolled over and checked my alarm clock. It was already half past noon, I hardly ever sleep in that late.

“Well you have a telephone call,” my mom explained, “Would you like me to tell them to call another time?”

“Nah, I’ll take it, thanks,” I replied and reached my arm back to my desk to get my portable.

“Hullo?” I rubbed my eyes and tried to wake up.

“Good morning sleepy head! Or should I say afternoon? You must have been out late last night. How did the date go?” Taylor prodded. I’m still not understanding why Taylor is calling me day and night, but I’m sure I will figure it out soon enough. I wasn’t going to be rude though since Taylor is a long time friend.

“It went, well, not so great,” I confessed.

“Whys that?”

“I didn’t like the guy like that. It wasn’t right, ya know? In a way the date was great though. It was great because it made me realize who I really do like in that way.”

“Sam, I know I’m hot, but bopping around from one bro to the next?” Taylor joked.

I ignored up the irony of that comment and answered sarcastically, “Oh yeah Tay! It’s all you.... I really miss Zac.”

“Yeah..” Taylor trailed off.

“Should I tell him?” I questioned Taylor thinking that maybe Zac would have hinted his current feelings about me to him.

“You can...” Taylor seemed to be hiding something, “In fact, you better, before it’s too late.”

“Too late?” I was confused.

“He’s seeing this other chic now,” Taylor revealed. It couldn’t be. Already? How could this happen? I was not prepared for this at all! I couldn’t even speak. After a long pause Taylor continued, “Don’t worry Sam, I didn’t mean for it to sound like he has a new girlfriend. I’m sure he still loves you. He’s only been on one date. No sweat!”

“Okay,” I began, “Well, I’m happy for him. I said he needed to date other girls and see if his feelings for me remained and so this is good,” I desperately tried to convince myself.

“Yeah..” Taylor was not sound convinced that I was ok, “Are you all right?”

“Uh huh,” I quickly cleared my head so as not to cry, “So why have you been calling me Tay?” I blurted out. I hoped I didn’t sound rude, it was the first thing that came to mind and if I didn’t change the subject I’d end up feeling foolish crying about Zac’s one date.

“You forget so quick! Don’t you remember what you promised me?” Taylor seemed insulted.

“Um,” I tried to sound pensive although I was spinning in circles wondering what he could possibly mean.

“You said you’d help me find a girl!”

“That’s right! I remember now. I’m sorry, a lot has been on my mind with the whole break up and, oh,” I sighed, “Yeah, I’m sorry about that Tay.”

“It’s all right Sam.”

I brushed the Zac feelings away again and concentrated on Taylor, “So what’s your type?” I asked in a jokingly seductive manner.

“I don’t know. Someone funny and playful who is patient and honest, like you I guess.”

“Thanks. Well, hmm, have you ever tried dating a groupie?”

“Groupie? You mean a fan? Well that wouldn’t work anyway! We have no fans!” Taylor joked.

I laughed, “You’re so funny! I guess I’m the only fan then. I’ll just have to show up at your window with a ‘Tay is Sexy’ sign! How about that?”

“Yeah baby!” Taylor chuckled.

Just then I heard a shuffling noise through the receiver, “Did someone pick up Tay?”

Before Taylor could answer I heard the smooth voice I had become so accustomed to, “Sorry, I didn’t know you were on the phone,” Zac was sullen.

“It’s ok,” Taylor said. Zac did not hang up. “I’ll be off soon Zac, you can hang up.”

“Is this Sam?” Zac murmured.

“Hey Zac,” I said quietly, forcing the words out. The situation could not have been any more awkward. There I was joking around with Taylor when he was the reason for the whole mix up. To Zac, who didn’t yet know that I wanted him more than ever, this situation must seem totally wrong. I would tell him now, I thought, ask Taylor to hang up and tell Zac everything. But I didn’t get that chance. After I said hello there was a pause and then a click. Zac hung up on me.
