Welcome to an Online Freedom Federation page. As some of you already know, Viacom has attempted to shut down several Internet sites, accusing them of copyright violation. Viacom then demanded them to remove from their websites all detailed summaries, full scripts, excerpts of full scripts, photographs, artistic rendering of Star Trek characters, sound files, video clips, books, excerpts of books, or basically anything that Paramount can legally hold a copyright for.

Legal does not mean sensible, unfortunately. These unofficial sites actually draw in thousands of new fans by freely promoting Star Trek. These sites do not take profit away from Viacom, but quite the opposite. Worse, the official Star Trek site, Continuum, can only available on Microsoft Network. To access Continuum, you would have to subscribe to MSN, and use only Internet Explorer.

What Viacom is doing will only hurt itself and Trekkers in the long run. These sites provide a link for Star Trek fans all over the world. From these sites we find out about the latest news, episodes, Trek happenings and are able to interact over long distances, which is practically impossible by conventional means.

OFF (Online Freedom Federation) is an organization of Star Trek fans, formed in 1997 and spearheaded by Luca Sambucci (also OFF chairperson). The objective is to find an agreement with Paramount/Viacom where their copyrights on Star Trek are protected from becoming public domain and the webmasters can use their copyrighted material, with some restrictions.

OFF has no formal membership. We are a strictly non-profit organization and all its activities are performed on a voluntary basis.

If you want to join OFF, or have any suggestions, new links, whatever, feel free to send e-mails. For more info on OFF, e-mail me or info@off-hq.org
