Urdu speaking people in India

Figures represent the percentage of total population who says that their mother tongue is Urdu. So the total number of people speaking and understanding Urdu is much higher. The data here also contradicts the popular myth that Urdu is the language of the Muslims. In Uttar Pradesh Muslims are about 30% of the population but the figure is only 9.74%.

All figures are quoted from the Report of the Office of the Comissioner for Linguistic Minorities, Government of India and is based on the 1991 consus covering the period from July 1989 to June 1990.
