Where in the World is Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is located in Central America, a crossroads between North and South America. It is one of the smallest countries in the isthmus, second only to El Salvador. It is about the same size as Maine. The country's biological diversity is amazing, considering the size of its territory.

Costa Rica is known worldwide for its volcanos, beaches and tropical rainforests. Among the most impressive volcanos we find the Arenal (with its perfect cone-shaped crater) and Poas (showing an emerald sulphur-filled crater).

Most of the country's tropical rainforests, as well as other natural environments have been protected from human interference since the 1960's. Close to ¼ of the 51,200 km² are National Parks, Protected Areas or Biological Reserves. This includes Cocos Island, located on the Pacific Ocean, which inspired Michael Crichton's Isla Nublar in Jurassic Park. The immense diversity of life forms that inhabit our territory include tiny hummingbirds, toucans, howler monkeys, huge iguanas, hundreds of species of butterflies, amazing swordfish, parrots and leopards.

There are several species of hummingbirds in Costa Rica.

The rainforests of Costa Rica, and other countries are the main source of pure oxygen for the entire Planet. The rate of deforestation and destruction will soon deprive us of air to breathe.

Costa Rica is bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Atlantic coast has a strong Caribbean influence, both in its weather and its culture.

Tortuguero Channels, on the Northern Atlantic coast is home to the manatee.
