In My research in finding the best hay mixture that would benefit the horse and then taking in to consideration the type of weather in Indiana I sudied the chart I have below and came up with the mixture that we planted for our hay field. I also took in the consideration of the hay being in deferent stages of maturity and still bening able to come up with a Hay mixture that the nutrients was sill good enough to be able to feed hay during the winter months and not have to feed grain. The mixture of Alfalfa,RedClover,OrchardGrass, Timothy was by far better than straight Alfalfa. I have also found over the 4 1/2 years we have gorwn this mixture it dose good in dry conditions and will grow slow but still grows with just dew falling on it.
