Red Wing News - December 2000

12\30 Igor Larionov chipped in a goal and Sergei Fedorov tied it up late, but the Wings
eventually fell in overtime in Chicago 2-3. next up: the Kings at the Joe on Sunday.

12\28 First, the good news. Igor Larionov is back with the Wings after an trade early this
morning for D Yan Golubovsky. The bad news is that Detroit lost to Minnesota last night 3-5.
Scoring were Fedorov(2) and Shanahan. Next up: at Chicago Friday night.

12\24 Detroit pulled it off again, this time it was Dandenault in Boston for the 2-1 OT winner.
Also scoring was Shanahan. Next up: Minnesota at the Joe on Wednesday.

12\23 Despite some horrible officiating and two good goals being disallowed, the Wings muster a
2-1 OT win vs. the Ducks. Scoring were Shanahan and Fedorov with the OT winner at :19. Next up:
at Boston tonight.

12\22 From the FreePress:"Red Wings general manager Ken Holland explored the possibility of
reacquiring Florida center Igor Larionov, but Larionov declined to waivethe no-trade clause
in his contract, the South Florida Sun-Sentinelreported Thursday.
Florida GM Bryan Murray told the paper: "I asked him if he wanted to go to Detroit. He said
no. Basically what he said is, as long as there's a certain person in that organization, he
doesn't want to go back there, and that's why he didn't sign there."
Murray didn't identify the person, but the paper identified him as senior vice president
Jim Devellano, attributing the information to a "source in Detroit" and "a player close to
Larionov."
Holland declined to comment. The other parties couldn't be reached.
Larionov won two Stanley Cups in five seasons with the Wings. He signed with the Panthers
last summer, saying the Wings treated him poorly during contract negotiations." Hmmmm....

Some randam notes....Sregei Fedorov became a U.S. citizen Thursday...Scotty rallied the troops
around a net at practice yesterday and talked to them quite a while about finishing this half of
the season strong...Manny Legace has taken a couple pucks to the head this week and will rest a
while, the Wings recalled Jason Elliot to backup Ozzie...Nick Lidstrom is the leading World All
Star defenseman in votes...

12\21 The Wings played a really solid game but ran into a goalie (Evgeni Nabokov)who played out of
his ass. Wings lose 0-2. Next up: Anaheim at the Joe on Friday.

12\19 Larry Murphy got the OT game winner vs. Edmonton 4-3. Tomas Holmstrom tied the game with :34
remaining to force the OT. Also scoring were Verbeek and Lidstrom. Steve Yzerman had 3 helpers.
Next up: The Sharks at the Joe on Wednesday.

12\17 The Wings played a great game with St.Louis which ended in a 2-2 tie. Not many shots on goal
in this one, it was a great defensive battle. The Wings are 10-4-2 away from the Joe Louis Arena,
the best road record in the NHL. Scoring were Kuznetsov (1st career)and Holmstrom. Next up:
Edmonton at the Joe on Monday.

12\16 Detroit looked great at Colorado last night, winning 5-3. Play was still a little sloppy at
times, especially on D, but they got the win never the less. Scoring were Draper, Lidstrom,
Holmstrom, McCarty, and Yzerman. Next up: at St.Louis tonight.

12\14 Sergei Fedorov celebrated his 31st birthday with a goal to help the Wings to a 3-3 tie with
Florida. Scoring were Verbeek, McCarty, and Fedorov. The team still looks ill defensively. Aside
from Lidstrom, they look like junior players out there. Scotty Bowman has expressed his desire to
retire after this season if the Wings don't go deep into the playoffs. The way things are going,
this is Scotty's fairwell tour. Next up: 2 toughies, at Colorado on Friday and at St.Louis on
Saturday.

12\11 The Wings looked good, but lost the second period shoot out to the Pens 3-4. Scoring were:
Yzerman, Kozlov, and Shanahan. "It was a disappointing loss, because Ozzie played so well,"
Captain Steve Yzerman said. "He's working his way back to top form." He did indeed play well.
Lance Roberts exhibited pee-wee level officiated, and it didn't help the Wing's cause. Marty
Lapointe got a double minor and a 10 minute major for voicing his concerns (I believe he called
him a cock sucker.) Next up: Florida at the Joe on Wednesday.

12\9 Steve Yzerman looked 25 again, leading the WIngs to a 5-1 win over the Flyers. Scoring were
McCarty, Yzerman, Draper, Kozlov, and Shanahan. Chris Osgood was stellar in goal. Next up: The
Pens at the Joe on Sunday.
Former Red Wing defenseman Gary Bergman died yesterday at 62. He's been fighting cancer for
a while. He played in Detroit from 1964 to 1973. He also played in Montreal and Minnesota.

12\7 The Wings were once again were screwed from the start, losing their secong straight 3-0,
this one to Toronto. Next up: Philly at the Joe on Friday.
