Karst Topography
The development of a Karst landscape
begins when groundwater percolates through limestone along joints and bedding
planes. Solution activity creates and enlarges caverns at and below
the water table. The solution of the limestone underground can cause
features on the surface. Large caverns can undermine an area so that
the roofs eventually collapse and depressions called sinkholes are formed
on the surface. Sinkholes are also formed by solution as descending
water enlarges cracks within limestone.
