Large posts extending 12 feet high about found were placed next to each other to form a wall in trenches about 18 inches wide and 3 foot by 5 foot deep. The first stockade had bastions, which were like guard towers. The second stockade was the largest one with large rectangular bastions. The third and fourth stockades had become progressively smaller rectangular bastions that were not closed across the back as were the second bastions, probably an attempt to conserve wood, as it took over 20, 000 logs to build each stockade, severely depleting the local forests. The entire community probably was involved in cutting, trimming, transporting and erecting logs after they had dug the trenches.
