OK, I thought it was about time
for me to get in the giving awards business... Why? Why not? I work on my pages as often
as possible and I love to surf the net looking for great pages. And they are there! I've
seen a couple that almost made me want to quit doing what I'm trying to do here. But
instead of getting discouraged, I decided to just work harder and try to make my pages
make you say/think "Wow!". I really don't like to apply for awards myself, most
of the awards I received where applied for by other people that happened to like my site,
or by people I helped with their pages or otherwise.
I'm not going to say I'm an
expert in designing Websites or in creating art, for I'm not. There's still so much to
learn out there and being an expert would mean you're finished learning. That is something
I can't imagine happening to me. I want to learn as much as possible and do the best I
can... Amaze myself and others if possible.
This is what I will be
checking your pages for:
- Frames
If you have frames, make sure I don't get stuck in them. Meaning? If I follow a
link, I want to see the new page as it is supposed to be seen, not with your frames around
it! If this is the case with your pages, please don't bother applying for either of my
awards.
- Design & navigation
Make me jealous with your design! I like pages that are easy to navigate, with
good color-schemes (I have to be able to read what's on your pages!). Try to keep
continuity in your pages. I don't like pages with numerous different backgrounds and
fonts. If you decide to use images/graphics as a navigation-system, please specify the
border width in the HTML (border="0"). I hate blue/purple/whatever color lines
around images & it's easy to fix!
- Animations
I do like animated gifs, especially the ones created by you (if created by
someone else, be sure to mention their names! If not, don't bother applying for either of
the awards). But please, don't fill your pages with animations only! They only distract me
from reading your content. Animated gifs I don't like: flashing (welcome) signs, running
cats & dogs and stuff like that....
- Content of the pages
I will read your pages, so be sure there are no typo's. I know I'm Dutch, but I
do know about English language.... Example: If I read a book I really like & I
discover a typo, I'm totally disappointed and annoyed by it. Sometimes I even put the book
away... You're warned!
- Java
I do like Java, I would like to know a lot more about it BUT... I hate the pop-up
windows asking me for my name, I really dislike the ones telling me what time it is (I do
have a clock myself!) especially when it shows what time it is in your part of the world
and not mine! You don't have to tell me what kind of system I use, I know what I'm using!
Furthermore, if you use Java, be sure it all works! I really won't consider your pages for
an award if error-messages keep popping up!
- Music
I do like sites that use music, but make sure there is a way for your visitors to
turn it off! You should also think about the type of music you want your visitors to
listen to. Make sure it compliments your pages.
- Links
I really don't mind links pages (I have some myself!), but it must be more than just that
& they must work! I will be checking for broken links. When I have visited you, I want
to have the feeling I 'know' you. An 'About Me' page would help....
- Other stuff
If there's any kind of (child)pornography, animal-abuse, racism, or anything offensive I
won't even consider your pages for my Award. If your pages are flashing with "under
construction" sign, I won't consider them for my Awards either. All sites are
constantly under construction, but that doesn't mean you have to put these signs on. If
your page is not ready yet, just don't upload it! Simple as that...
Having all this spelled out,
there is just one thing left for me to say. Well, two actually.... First of all; signing
my Guestbook definitely helps if you apply for my Award, but apply for the award by using
the form or sending me an e-mail. Don't apply for any of my Awards by signing the
Guestbook. Second; I would appreciate a 'Thank you' e-mail after I have presented my Award
to you. I think that's only fair! I always do so & I expect the same from my
visitors...
