'TOPPER,' THE MUSICAL

By ELEANOR CHARLES

From: The New York Times, WESTCHESTER GUIDE

''Topper,'' a new musical with an original script by Jerry Sterner, may be seen through July 6 at the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center at 117 Main Street in Nyack. Based on the Thorne Smith novel and the film and television series derived from it, the story concerns George and Marion, a chic young couple circa 1935, who die in an automobile accident but remain earthbound as high-spirited ghosts.

Ron Holgate, a Tony Award winner, and Elizabeth Ward will portray the couple, and Skip Lackey will have the title role.

Music for the production consists of 16 Cole Porter songs winnowed from 1,200 that Mr. Sterner and his associates considered. The book has been altered by turning George and Marion into a Broadway musical comedy team rather than a typical wealthy American playboy and girl. The car crash comes after they have announced the end of their marriage, and Topper, their accountant, is the only person to whom they are visible, ectoplasmically.

Performances on Tuesdays through Saturdays are at 8 P.M., and matinees on Saturdays and Sundays are at 3 P.M. Tickets from $20 to $32.50, with discounts available for students and adults 65 and older, may be reserved by calling 358-6333.
