Joab Brooks,Esq. was living in Orange County(Chatham County NC) prior to 1756, having moved there from Cumberland County, NC.

In 1761 he was granted 375 acres "in the county of Orange on the waters of Ephraims creek".
It was on this parcel of land that Joab Brooks lived and it was included in Chatham County at its formation.
His land grants totaled more than one thousand acres.

In 1774 Joab Brooks,Esq. was appointed Judge of the County Court of Pleas and Quarter Session.

On Nov 14, 1775, his will was proved in Court by Thomas and Isaac Brooks, his execs., and his estate was ordered to be sold.

Early Chatham County court records show him appointed as a member of the Court as Magistrate and as a member of Justices. He was also appointed as Commisioner of Peace. Captain Joab Brooks commanded the Chatham County Militia in 1771. The Militia had a roster of 137 men.
