History of the Neville Part of The Navin, Nevin Clan
Neville, Anne 1456-1485. Daughter of Richard Neville, ' The Kingmaker', 16th Earl or Warwick, and Anne Beauchamp; Queen of Richard III. In 1470 was married to Edward, son of Henry VI. But her fathers restoration of Henry VI to the English throne in 1470-1471 did not prove lasting and both her father and her husband died in the battles with the Yorkists in 1471. Later That year Richard, 3rd Duke of Gloucester (the Future Richard the III), sought to marry her, but his brother george, 3rd Duke of Clarence, Anne's sister's husband, opposed the match, seeking to keep all Warwicks vast estates in his own Family. Rumour had it that George hid Anne in a London mansion Disquised as a Kitchen maid. In 1492 Richard and George debated the issue before Edward IV, and then took it to Parliament, which agreed to the marriage and decreed that Warwick esates be partitioned betweed the brothers. The marriage took place two years later . Anne died in 1485, the year after the death of her only child, Edward.///////////////////// Neville, George, Archbishop of York 1433?-1476 Chancellor of Oxford University(1453-1557 ); Bishop of Exeter (1456-1465); Chancelor of England (1460-1467, 1470-1471); Archbishop of York (1465-1476). In 1463 George was an ambassador of Edward IV to Louis XI of France, whom he won away support of the Lancastrians. he celebrated his installation at York in 1463 with great splendour. In 1469 George secretly performed the marriage Ceremony between Isabel, elder daughter of his brother Richard 'The Kingmaker", 16th Earl of Warwick,and George . 3rd Duke of Clarence, brother of Edward IV and of the future Richard III; this was a seal of alliance in their joint attempt to oust Edward from the throne. In 1470 Edward fled to Flanders and George Neville became chancellor to Henry VI. when Edward returned to England and his throne the following year, George Surrendered Henry VI and he himself was imprisoned, though for only 2 months. But in 1472 Edward, perhaps suspecting him of plotting with Clarence once more, arrested him and had him exiled to Hammes, near Calais, where he remained in prison untill 1474, his lands and revenues forfeit. George was a patron of learning and supported oxford colleges./////////////////////// Neville, Hugh de d. 1222 Hugh accompanied Richard I to Palestine in 1190 and was present at the siege of Joppa in 1192. In the same year the King appointed him chief forester and he continued in this capacity under King John, whose henchman and gaming companion he became. His wife was John's mistress; in 1204 she paid the king 200 chickens to spend one night with her husband. Although Hugh did well out of his association with John, he joined the Baronial party 1216.//////////////Neville, Isabel 1451-1476. Isabel was secretly married by her uncle George Neville, archbishop of York, to George, 3rd Duke of Clarence, brother of Edward IV and Richard, 3rd Duke of Gloucester (the future Richard III), at Calais on july 11th 1469. The marriage cemented the alliance between Warwick and Clarence, which was designed to topple Edward from the throne. the two briefly returned Henry VI to power in 1470-1471, but Warwick was killed at the battle Barnet 1471. The following year his estates were divided between Clarence and Gloucester husband of Isabel's sister Anne./////////////////////////////Neville, Ralph 1st Earl of Westmorland 1364-1425. Sixth Baron Neville (1388-1425); 1st Earl of Westmorland (1397-1425); Marshal of England (1399); Knight of the garter (1402); warden of the western marches (1403); Joint warden for the northern marches. A close associate of Richard II, Ralph support him at the trial of the lords appellant in 1397. His reward-appointment as earl of Westmorland angered the Percy family, his chief rivals. Ralphs's second wife, Joan Beaufort, was halfsister of Henry Bolingbroke and in 1399 he turned against Richard , and supported henry on his return from exile and accession that year as Henry IV. After Henry "Hotspur", Percy's death at the battle of shrewsbury in 1403. Ralph was made warden of the western marches previously a percy title. During the revolt against the King of 1405 he routed the main rebel force and took it leaders, Thomas Mowbray and Archbishop Ricard ld Scrope, Prisoner by false truce> Ralph, who thereafter continued to dominate the North, was as executor of Henry V's will. His Dauther Cicely married Richard, 3rd Duke of york and was the mother of two future kings of england; Edward IV and Richard III .////////////////////////Neville,, John 1st Marquis of Montague c.1431-1471 Younger son of Richard Neville, 8th Earl of Salisbury; Yorkist baron; knight of the garter (1462) 12th Earl of Northumberland (1464-1470) 1st Marquis of Montaque (1470- 1471) John Took full part in Yorkist uprisings in the north in 1453 and 1457 and was imprisoned by the lancastrains in Chester castle in 1459-1460 following his release he fought at the second battle of St Albans (1461) as was held at york but freed by Edward IV after the battle of Towton (1461). In 1464 he crushed the Lancastrains at hexham and was made a Earl of NorthUmberland for his sterling services to Edward IV. In 1470, however he was deprived of the earldom of Northumberland, which Edward restored to Henry Percy. The Marquisate of Montague proved insufficient compensation, and John deserted to the Lancastrain camp. He died at the battle of Barnet, fighting for his brother Richard, the Kingmaker' 16th earl of Warwick in support of Henry VI. TO BE CONTINUED
