21 GUN SALUTE
An Loc, Vietnam, 1968
"GRAND OLD FLAG"
I have a lot of pride
in my country. I was drafted into the Army in December of 1965. My Basic
Training was at Fort Benning, Georgia and after graduation, promoted to E-2 then received
orders for AIT (Advanced Infantry Training) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After
AIT, I went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for OCS. I graduated from Officer Candidate
School in Class 2-67. My first orders as a new lieutenant were for USATC, Fort
Benning, Georgia. As a training officer, executive officer, and company commander, I
gained a lot of experience.
The Vietnam War was a turning point in my life. I'm glad to
have had the opportunity to serve my country, but it left me with some awful memories and
emotional scars that I will never forget. I served in the 1st Infantry Division -
BIG RED ONE - (Artillery) in Vietnam in 1967-68. I was awarded
the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon,
National Defense Ribbon, the Vietnamese Campaign Ribbon, the Vietnamese
Cross of Gallantry, and the RVN Overseas Service Ribbon.
