Capt. F. M. Jackson
1836-1914
We would like to welcome you to the first SCV Camp in Oregon! Our camp was named for a brave hero of the Confederacy.Captain Francis Marion Jackson.
Capt. Jackson was born in Athens, Tennessee in 1836. In June of 1861, he joined the 4
th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry as a private. Two months later he was promoted to lieutenant of "Peck's Light Dragoons." His company fought at the Battle of Wildcat where he was promoted to captain serving with General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer. The 4th Tennessee fought at Fisher's Creek and was pushed back to Tennessee. At the Battle of Chattanooga, Capt. Jackson's horse was shot out from under him and the captain was badly wounded. When he returned to duty, he fought at Vicksburg. He was captured at the Battle of Black River and spent 18 months at Johnson's Island Prison Camp near Sandusky, Ohio. After his exchange, Capt. Jackson was sent as an escort to President Jefferson Finis Davis. The President relieved his escort of duty and the following day was captured. After the war, Capt. F. M. Jackson came west and settled in the Hood River Valley about Nov. 15, 1871. He lived here until his death in Jan. 1914.

This book, says Combs gives a real close tie to the South, and a reason to come visit Fort Dalles. Compatriot Lawrence Limpus and wife Pat were honored at a luncheon at The Baldwin Saloon, with some members of The Varina Howell Davis Chapter # 2369 and our Camp.May 3rd 2004.
