Theories of the causes differ, but the Hmong were separated into five distinct sub-categories based on clothing and dialect differences:
Green Hmong.
White Hmong. White Hmong dialect is the most common dialect encountered in the United States today.
Black/ Blue Hmong.
Striped Hmong or "hmoob txaij". According to one legend, long ago a poor orphan girl found herself alone in the jungle surrounded by tigers. Lacking any means of defending herself, she sewed scraps of fabric onto her clothing to create a tiger disguise. Later, a tiger leaped out at her, saw the stripes, and fled in confusion.
Flowery Hmong.
