Biography

Alanis Nadine Morissette was born on June 1st, 1974 in Ottawa, Canada to parents Alan and Georgia Morissette. She has two brothers, one is her twin Wade and the other is Chad, which is older than her by two years.
Alanis loved dancing and acting when she was young and started learning ballet and jazz dancing at the age of 7. She also had a part at the popular kids television show "You Can't Do That On Television" at the age of 11.
She started writting songs at the age of 9 for fun and at the young age of 11, with the help of a freind of her family who was in the music business, she independently recorded her first single, "Fate Stay With Me". Although the song wasn't a hit, it did get some airplay on Canadian radio stations.
At age 13, Alanis met Leslie Howe, and they started writing together. Eventually, she was signed to MCA, and she recorded her first album, "Alanis", in 1990. The album was released in 1991, the music on that album was mostly pop and dance.
The album was a big hit and went platinum in Canada. Her success won her a Juno Award as the most promising new female vocalist.
Her next album, "Now Is the Time", was released by MCA in late 1992. "Now Is the Time" was also a pop album, but seemed to be more mature than her first album. Not as successful as "Alanis", "Now Is the Time" nevertheless went platinum in Canada.
Although she was well known in Canada, Alanis was unknown in the United States, (her biggest gigs so far were singing the national anthem at the first Ottawa Senator's game and singing her song "Too Hot" on the 1992 NHL Awards), but that all changed, when she was signed to Madonna's Maverick Label. Alanis then met Glen Ballard through MCA publishing and the two started writting together.
Her third album, "Jagged Little Pill", was released in 1995 by Maverick. The album was a hit and has sold over 16 million copies since it's release in June 1995, and with it Alanis won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album; Juno Awards for Album of the Year, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album, plus two others; MTV Video Music Awards: Best Editing, Best Female Video and Best New Artist in a Video.
In late fall, 1997, Alanis and Glen Ballard returned into the studio to work on the next album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie", which hit the stores on November 3rd, 1998.
She also landed a role on the big screen, playing God in Kevin Smith's forthcoming film "Dogma".
At the early part of 1998 Alanis also contributed the song "Uninvited" to the City of Angels soundtrack.
