The Wizard of Oz, 1939. Two Academy Awards for music, five additional nominations Judy Garland, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, (plays five parts, have you found them all?), TOTO. Mostly directed by Victor Fleming. (He gets the final credit)

The Ultimate Oz, re release for the 50th anniversary, includes script, out-takes, and how it was made video.

The Wizard of Oz on Ice, 1995. This is the video of the television special shown on CBS last year. It is also a currently touring ice show.

Reap the Wild Wind, 1942. John Wayne, Ray Milland, Paulette Goddard, Raymond Massey, Robert Preston, Susan Hayward, Hedda Hopper. Directed by the great Cecil B. Demille. It earned one Academy Award for special effects, (the underwater stuff is fun), and two additional nominations. The Cairn is a prominent actor throughout.

The Uninvited, 1944. Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey. Directed by Lewis Allen. Nice and creepy, the Cairn is crucial to the plot.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 1947. Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison, George Sanders. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Cairn? Yes Indeed! Watch it again, and this time take note of Mrs. Muir's dog.

Bright Eyes, 1934. Bad news, this one is also available colorized. Shirley Temple, James Dunn, Jane Withers. Directed by David Butler. A Cairn has the role of Shirley's dog Rags.

Without Love, 1945. Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Lucille Ball, Keenen Wynne. Directed by Barbara Sass. Spencer Tracy turns out to be a Cairn fancier.

Hocus Pocus, 1993Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, directed by Kenny Ortega. A Disney Halloween offering. A Cairn has a small but pivotal role in an extended cameo with Penny and Garry Marshall.

Twister, 1995. Blockbuster tornado movie. The movie opens with a Cairn in a storm cellar scene that sends the plot on a twist. I like the soundtrack and the picture is not bad.

The Valley of Decision, 1945. Greer Garson, Gregory Peck, directed by Tay Garnett. Wealthy 1800's mill baron falls for housemaid.

Saturn 3, 1980. Farrah Fawcett, Kirk Douglas, Harvey Kitel, directed by Stanley Donen, the Cairn Terrier Sally is pivotal to the plot as she senses danger first. Unfortunately her sense of character leads to her demise. Campy sci-fi picture.

George Washington Slept Here, 1942. Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan, Charles Coburn, directed by William Keighley. House renovation mayhem, canny Cairn, very funny.

Dunston Checks In, 1996. Jason Alexander, Cairn as guest at a hotel throughout film.

Portrait of a Lady, Nicole Kidman, Cairn Terrier throughout movie

My Summer Vacation, British movie, has Cairn puppies in disguise, said to be very entertaining.

Airforce, I am not sure of the year or stars of this picture. It is movie about WWII flyers and there is a section in which a Cairn is delivered to a base for safekeeping. I have only seen this one snippit of the film; it was passed on to me without titles or year of film. If anyone on the list has seen it and knows the rest of the information about the movie, let me know.

And T.V. too!

There is an episode of Upstairs Downstairs in which the family's daughter sneaks a pup into the household. The whole episode is based on hiding the dog and of course the dog is a Cairn. Name of episode unknown.

There is an episode of the British comedy series Are You Being Served Again in which a very large wheaten cairn is the only watchdog to a newly purchased herd of sheep that the cast is trying to retrieve to save from the dinner plate. Name of episode unknown.

The Lucy and Desi Hour, A short lived television show that occurred when the Little Ricky character was portrayed at about nine years of age. The famous real life divorce had either just happened or was in the works, so it is the last work with the couple together with Fred and Ethel. There is a long running gag in the show with little Ricky's dog Fred. Of course whenever the name was called, both Freds came running. Fred the dog was also known to occasionally disappear, he usually turned up at his beloved obedience academy, which is the only place he was known to obey commands. Fred was a Cairn.

I know there are other movies with Cairn terriers in them, but persons who told me of them, when they heard of my quest, could not give me enough information to find them. If you know of any I missed, E-mail me and let me know.

Just a buzz from the bees,

Trish Watson
