Band instruction in the Fayette County Public Schools begins in grade five, where the high school band directors teach beginning band at each of the county's twelve elementary schools. Emphasis is on development of characteristic tone, establishing a foundation for and understanding of basic rhythms, and developing rehursal habits. Instruction at the elementary schools occurs 3 to 4 days per week, depending upon the elementary schools' schedule. At the middle school level band instruction takes place daily in grades 6, 7, and 8. There are currently five middle schools in the Fayette County System, each with a full time band director. At Sandy Creek High School, the vast majority of our students receive their middle school training at Flat Rock Middle School, Ms. Debbie Baker, Band Director.

Each spring at Sandy Creek High School, all band students in grades 8-11 are auditions, and all wind students are placed in one of two performing band classes: Concert Band I or Symphonic Winds. In the fall semester, percussionists are placed in one of two percussion techniques classes: Intermidiate or Advanced. Marching percussionists are automatically in the advanced class to practice marching music. Percussionists are auditions each fall for placement during spring semester in all of the perfroming classes. There is also one percussion techniques class offered each spring. In addition, there is a Beginning Band class offered for students wishing to learn a new instrument or strengthen performance in a particular area.

The band program at Sandy Creek High School has compiled an enviable record of success in the ten year history of the school. The Symphonic Winds has earned supirior ratings in both performance and sightreading at the Georgia Music Educators' Association State Music Festivals in each of the eight years since the group was formed.The band has performed at the 1995 Southern Division Convention of the Music Educators' National Conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and at the 1996 Southeasterm United States Concert Band Clinic at Troy State University in Troy, Alabama. The band has won "Best in Class" honors at the Festival of Champions in Panama City, Florida, the All American Music Festival in Orlando, Florida, and the Smokey Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The entire band program performed in May 1998 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The Sandy Creek High School Marching Band, which consists of members of Concert Band I, Symphonic Winds, and Percussion Techniques, along with the Patriot Colorguard, has earned a reputation for outstanding performances by earning numerous supirior ratings and "Best in Class" awards. The "Pride of the Patriots" represented the United States in the 1996 New Year's Day Parade in London, England, and has performed five times in the Egleston Children's Christmas Parade in Atlanta, Georgia. For the 2001 season, the Patriot marching band won numerous superior trophies at all their competitions and best in class awards, dispite their small size.
