On February 11, 1999, about 0545 local, Southern Star Airlines Flight IAH005, a 737-600 register number N3447SS, was departing Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), runway 8. The crew completed the takeoff checklist and advanced down the runway. According to the pilot, at about 85 knots, the #1 engine shuttered and exploded. The crew kept the aircraft on the ground, put the throttles at idle, and aborted the takeoff. While trying to slow down, the aircraft veered of the left side of the runway, due to lack of straight heading control from the #1 engine. The aircraft wing was damaged in the explosion and the landing gear was damaged, along with a few runway-edge lights. About 22 passengers sustained only minor bumps and bruises. The other 135 passengers were uninjured. An IFR flight plan had been filed for the flight which originated at Houston's KIAH enroute to Boston's Logan (KBOS).
