kakariki’s are strong fliers but in captivity them seem to prefer to climb so it is therefore more important to give them climbing area as to flying area

In Doors As Pets

An idea size for a pet kakariki is 1m square with a false floor. If you are buying a cage try to get one with horizontal bars on the side because your kakariki will enjoy climbing up it. A word of warning kakariki’s have long legs so don’t put anything dangerous near the cage.

Aviaries

kakariki’s will do fine in a none breeding mixed aviary as they are not bullies but if you are going to breed they should be a pair to an aviary. If possible it should have an earth floor as kakariki’s love digging and scratching al lot like chickens. If it does have an earth floor you should try to keep it clean as kakariki’s will often try to eat anything. For breeding purposes pairs should not come within 1m of seeing each other but it seems that they don’t really bother if they hear each other.

kakariki’s aren’t big gnawers so a wood aviary will only get mild attacks. And a twisted wire mesh is fine as there is no way a kakariki can damage it. If you live in a cooler climate than New Zealand there home land the will appreciate an indoor outdoor set up. In aviaries like this it is possible for the bird to breed year round.
