Elgin, Nebraska Centennial History Book: Cleon Earl Pratt. son of Stephen Earl and Elsie Gladys (Howe) Pralt was born September 28. 1909. He attended the Swede School and Park Center School west of Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School in l925. Cleon attended Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, NE, and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He taught school in the Beaver Valley in Wheeler County for two years, and some of his students were older than he was. He also farmed the family farm. Cleon served in the U.S. Arms in World War II from April 24. 1942 to Nov.19. 1945. He was a Staff Sergeant with the 156th Ord Tire Repair Company as a Supply Technician, going first to North Africa and then to Dole, France. After his discharge, he returned to Elgin where he lived with his mother, farmed and ranched the family land and also started his tax service during the winter months. Cleon was a member of the Elgin United Methodist Church, serving as Church Treasurer for a number of years. He was active in civic and community affairs, and a long time member of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce. serving a term as president. He was active in the Republican Party, served as Antelope County chairman for several sears and on state committees, was State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a National Council Member for two years, a Charter Member of the Sharkey-Reuss VFW Post, member of the American Legion, a Master of Antelope Lodge No. 276, A. F. & A. M., Elgin, a member of the Avesta Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a long time member of the Nebraska Cattlemen's Association. Cleon was made an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska on Oct. 12, 1950 during the governorship of Val Peterson. He was a Registered Public Accountant until his death on Jun e 24, 1981. He was interred at West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin.
