Ladies First
Every Woman Counts

What is Ladies First?

The Vermont Department of Health has a federal grant to help reduce breast and cervical cancer deaths. The program offers free mammograms and Pap tests to women 50 and over with limited income.

Why is the program limited to
low-income women 50 and over?

Older women have the highest incidence of cancer. Those with lower incomes are far less likely than others to have regular screenings. The Ladies First program helps women with the highest risk and the greatest need.

Are Vermont women at
more risk than others?

Vermont has ranked in the top ten states for breast and cervical cancer deaths for the past three decades.

About 100 Vermont women die each year from breast cancer.

Breast and cervical cancer survival depend on finding it early. If women 50 and over have annual breast cancer screenings, these deaths can be reduced by 30%. Deaths from cervical cancer are completely preventable with early screening.

Low income is a major barrier to screening in Vermont, only 39% of low income women have had breast cancer screenings in the past two years, compared with 93% of upper income women.

She or he will also give you a referral for a mammogram in your area and will report all results to you. All of these services will be provided at no cost to you. If you have Medicare or private insurance, Ladies First will pay for the gap between the cost of annual screening and your other coverage.

4. In one year, you will receive a reminder to schedule your next free screenings.
