This in-name only remake attracted most of it's attention when star David Caruso abandoned television's NYPD Blue for a shot at big-screen prominence. It was a good career move; he's excellent as the tortured Jimmy Kilmartin, a small-time car thief whose attempts to go straight are thwarted by psychopathic "Little Junior" Brown (Nicolas Cage, taking over Richard Widmark's cackling thug in the original). Despite the impending clash between these two, scripter Richard Price gets far to much mileage out of the complicated bond between Caruso and Samuel L. Jackson's police investigator.
