Regional Tournament Preview

Brandon Ashley, Junior Gonzalez, Tony Chapin and Troy Cunningham will lead the Bears into Chelan Highschool this Saturday. Each of these wrestlers has a chance of becoming a regional champion and moving onto state in good shape. Ashley narrowly missed winning his third District title, but should get another chance at Conrad Garza of Othello in the finals. Cunningham will have a tough day at 103 with 6 other wrestlers who are all capable of advancing to state.

Junior Gonzalez should have an easier time at 145, with Adam Orozco of Connell and Wil Paton of Cashmere on the other side of the bracket. Tony Chapin has a renewed confidence and it could vault him to the finals at Regionals. His opponent will probably be Lukas Wolff of Chelan.

Late comer, Daniel Gonzalez will have a much tougher test against a better slew of wrestlers from the North. He had a great showing at District, but it will take even more to advance to state. Jeff Slape will need to rely on good wrestling rather than a DQ to advance. He has shown great improvement over the course of the year.

Ryan Phipps needs to have his best tournament ever, something that he is very capable of doing, to advance. Ryan is capable of beating some of the best in the CWAC. Zac Clegg will get some great experience as he participates in his first Regionals.

As a team the Bears are taking 8 wrestlers and 1 alternate (Kyle Hagins). A team title is probably not in the cards, but they may have a chance if 5 of the 8 can make it to the finals and the other 3 can pick up a lot of team points along the way. Of course the heavy weights (Grandview, Othello, Ephrata and Cashmere) will have to self distruct as well. It is a tall order, but in the post-season, anything is possible.
