Kiona-Benton vs. Toppenish

The biggest win of the night belonged to Johnny Rivera. His 7-4 win over 7th ranked Guillermo Rodriguez put the Bears up 9-0 on the Wildcats. Rivera started the match by throwing Guillermo to his back for an immediate 5-0 lead. Johnny wrestled cautiously but impressively.

The most exciting match of the night belonged to Troy Cunningham as he took on the top ranked JJ Garza. JJ placed 4th at state last year, but he had all he could handle with Troy. Cunningham spent most of the match countering anything that JJ threw at him. Troy scored first and nearly had Garza on his back at the edge of the mat. With nearly 1 minute remaining in the match and a 2-1 lead, Troy could not fend off a deep double leg by Garza and was taken to his back. All in all an impressive showing by Cunningham. Troy just might be able to provide a different outcome at District.

Ashley, Gonzalez, Chapin and Phipps dominated their matches with 3 pins and a tech fall. Ashely threw his man to his back 4 times to gain a tech fall, while Junior unleashed a new weapon, a leg ride, to get the pin. Chapin muscles a double leg to the back for a pin and Phipps grabbed a single leg and put in a half to end his match.

Seniors Tommy Small and Jeff Slape continued thier recent success with pins at 171 and 125 respectively. Both looking a little more confident in their abilities as the season progresses.

Justin Hunt stayed with Iggy Castenada but couldn't muster an escape late in the match to stay alive. Hunt held an early lead after putting Castenada on his back for a 4-2 lead. Hunt is getting more valuable mat time and just might be ready to turn some heads come Districts.

Hagins wrestled 4 periods in his match. After coming from 4 points down to move within 1 of Pech, the ref decided that he had given the wrong wrestler the choice at the end of the first. So all points were nullified and the second round was started over with Pech leading 3-2.
