Regional Tournament Results

Troy Cunningham Continued his winning ways, improving his season record to 33-2 and recording his first regional championship, his 6th tournament title of the year. All that is left is the state title. Sammy Salcedo of Granger came out strong in the finals and looked like he might be able to match Troy early on. But Troy slowly pulled away using an arm-bar / tilt to score back points and a close match was not so close at the end as Troy won 15-6.

Andy Campbell and Jake Johanns each took 4th places. Johanns wrestled Valdez of Wahluke for, I think, the 4th time this year. The score now stands at 2-2 as Valdez won this time 10-7. Johanns never showed signs of giving up though, his quickeness and techinque kept him in the match until the final buzzer. Campbell used a couple pins to secure his place to state, his last one coming at the expense of Farias. Enoel escaped with a 3-2 nail biter against Andy Rivera of Mabton in a first round consolation match before pinning Derek Campbell of Naches Valley to place 5th.

Kyle Hagins and Sam Landoe waited until the 5th-6th place matches to secure their trips to state. Hagins tech'd his Highland opponent after falling behind early. Hagins missed making it to the finals after losing a close, hard fought match to Caleb Ferch of Goldendale. Landoe's 5th place finish was another nail-biter. The points were flying back and forth between Landoe and his Riverview opponent. Landoe led 10-9 with about a minute left and decided to let his opponent go. Score 10-10. In a scramble Landoe was awarded a takedown to lead 12-10. With time running out it looked like Sam may get reversed but he gutted it out and hung on for the win.

Though Samsel, Roos and Henderson did not make it the next step to state, they gained much needed exposure to the regionals atmosphere. Now they know what it is going to take to make it to the next step.

The Bears will be taking 6 wrestlers to state this year. It's possible that they could be coming back with 6 medals, but it isn't going to be easy.
