SCAC East District

The Bears made a good showing placing 4th and qualifying 7 wrestlers for regionals in Zillah next week. Troy Cunningham and Jesse Henderson collected District titles and Evan Olinger, Devon Hudspeth, Antonio Lopez, Sam Landoe and Britt Samsel all will be moving on.

The best match of the night belonged to Jesse Henderson. The 140 pound championship match against Wes Jenks of Connell started off with Jesse on the offense, but Jenks managed to get the Td and lead 2-0. Jesse came back with a reverse to tie the score but Jenks reversed back to make it 4-2. Jesse gave up an escape to start the 3rd when he connected on a double leg to close the gap to 5-4. He cut Jenks loose again and as both wrestlers took the shot and collided, Jesse came out with a head-arm with 30 seconds remaining in the match and held Jenks down for as the seconds ticked off to win 9-6. Jesse has always had a good shot, but now that shot seems to be unstoppable.

Troy took care of business at 125. He seems to always be in control no matter what the circumstance. Troy wrestles like a state champion, though freshman Chance Watt of Riverview gave him a tough struggle early. Troy looks poised to defend his title at state this year. Regionals could possibly be a rematch with Watt.

Samsel took 2nd and should be in great position to earn a birth to state at regionals next week. Landoe, Hudspeth and Olinger took 3rd. Landoe recorded 2pins on his way to third while Hudspeth recorded a pin and a major, 10-2 in the consolation finals. Olinger, a freshman, wrestled impressively and will need the same kind of performance next week to earn a state birth. Look for big things from Olinger in years to come.

Antonio Lopez earned a hard fought 4th place to advance to regionals. Andy Campbell took 5th in what was a very tough 125 pound weight class. Isaias Farias placed 6th. Travis Roos wrestled tough though his season came to an end with an 8-15 loss in the consolations.
