Kia ora and Welcome New Zealand is a paradise in the the Pacific Ocean, to the SE of Australia. New Zealand consists of the North Island, South Island and Stewart Island along with several smaller islands. The main basis of the economy is livestock rearing, especially sheep farming. Mineral resources include coal, gold, limestone and silica sand. From about the 14th century the islands were inhabited by the Maoris, a Polynesian people. The first European to discover New Zealand was Tasman in 1642, who called it Staten Land, later changed to Nieuw Zealand.
