BUZ LARKIN 1972 - 1985 VICE PRESIDENT-ADMINISTRATION, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT-ADMINISTRATION DEN I am now a mediator at the NMB in DC. I heard Don died also. So too did Buz Larkin. -Jack Kane (2/16/99) Jake, Buzz did fly west in about 1994 or 1995. The information that I got was that he was dancing with his youngest daughter at her wedding and collapsed on the dance floor, never regaining consciousness. What a shame. He was a real fine guy and as honest a person as you could hope to find. Although we spent alot of time across the table from each other in negotiations, we respected each other and became good friends. Buzz went back to General Tire in Akron OH after the O'Niels sold FAL (in 1985). His family stayed in the DEN area and he commuted to Akron every week. He rode from CLE to DEN with me once while I was at CAL. What a surprise for both of our to meet in the concourse at CLE! He said that the tire company labor relations was a real drag and he really wanted to get back into airline industrial relations again but the financial part just wasn't there. ALPA and other airlines were interested in hiring him but they wouldn't pay nearly enough to offset what General Tire paid. -H.A. Frost (4/26/99) Allan "Buz" Larkin Age 60 A LARKIN Birth 25Jan1933 Death 15Jul1993 Info from Social Security Death Index -Ken Schultz (3/30/00) I have many memories of Buz from my dealings with him as ALEA Master Chairman, 1980-84. He was very professional and cool yet affable most of the time. It took only a few moments with him to recognize his toughness. During the two negotiations I went through with him, I saw him lose his cool only once. That was in 1980 when we had wrangled at length about improving the pension plan. The company at that time contributed 1% of the employees' salaries into the plan. We wanted 1.5% and had hammered hard on this item for weeks. Finally we reached an agreement on that figure and Mort Wigderson (ALEA's lawyer) wrote up some language which I took down the hall to Buz' secretary, Janet Tashiro, to be typed up. A little later we signed off on the typed copy - Buz doing so with only a cursory look at the copy. We recessed for awhile & Buz headed for his office. He had started reading his copy of the signoff language and we heard him start yelling down the hall, "Goddamned you, Mort!!!" The signed off agreement stipulated that 1.75% of an employees' salary be paid into the pension plan. Buz, to his credit, accepted the signoff but he never forgave Mort and got his revenge at the next negotiations when we were forced to take a 10% reduction in wages as efforts to save Frontier began. -Jake Lamkins (1/17/01) And then there was the time Buz, Don Hatfield (Dir-Ind Rel) and I ran up a $700 bar tab at their hotel in MIA during the 1982 negotiations. Nobody picked up a tab when Buz was around. He was very arrogant about always paying. We three had met after I convinced our lawyer, Mort Wigderson, for me to meet with them to break the negotiations logjam we were in. After five hours of talking and constantly drinking we got past their hangup and were able to move forward the next day. I survived due to my Irish ancestry and years of practice. All three of us were right on time next day too. I'll never forget that $700 tab tho and the offhand casual way Buz said, "I got this." However, the overall result of the negotiations was very unsatisfatory and still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The NMB twisted some arms and even sent an NMD member (one of Reagan's henchmen) to DEN in the latter stages. We ended up with a giveback contract that was the beginning of the slipperyslope down for FL. -Jake Lamkins (5/20/03) Article: Ross E. Bailey. (General Tire and Rubber Co.) Larkin first appears in the 1973 FL Annual Report as VP - Administration, a position that was not listed on the 1972 Annual Report. It's safe to assume Buz started at FL in 1972. The 1983 Annual Report shows him Senior VP-Administration. -Jake Lamkins (8/2/09)
