*The first American team to hoist The Cup was the Seattle Metropolitains in 1917.

*The Stanley Cup Playoffs have only been cancelled once. In the 1917-18 season, there was an influenza epidemic that ended up claiming the life of the Canadian's hit man Joe Hall, while several other players were hospitaized from the dreded "Spanish Flu".

*The Playoffs consisted of the winners of the 1st half of the seasons spilt schedule and the winners of the 2nd half. Due to the fact that the Ottawa Senators won both halfs of the season, there were no playoffs in the 1919-20 season.

*Ice Hockey debuts in the 1920 Summer Olympics, with Canada emerging with the gold medal.
*The NHL is first broadcasted over live radio during the 1922-23 season.

*The first individule trophy, The Hart Trophy, is awarded to the NHL's most valuable player. It was first awarded in the 1923-24 season to Ottawa's Frank Nighbor.

*The first Lady Bing Trophy, for sportsmanship and ac- complishment, was awarded in the 1924-25 season to Ot- tawa's Frank Nighbor.

*The first goalie mask was worn in the 1929-30 season.

*Great Britain wins its frst and only gold medal in ice hockey in the 1936 Winter Oympics.

*Soviet Union win their first Olympic gold medal in ice hockey in 1956.
