I Get Paid to Do This?

Things I've been paid to do while working at....

A Cloth store

Tell people how big an eighteen inch pillow is.
Calculate how much cloth is needed to cover the eighteen inch pillow.
Tell people that no, I can't give them that one extra inch for free (and have them get mad at me for it).
Cut three inches of fabric off of about two dozen bolts of cloth.
Guard against people who like to steal large bolts of fabric (not to mention small televisions!).

A Bookstore

Explain why the owner doesn't file all of the over three thousand used books in the store (not to mention the two hundred or so that come in and out daily) on computer, simply so customers won't have to acctually go to the shelf to look for it.
Stop everything I'm doing, so that I can listen to the world's slowest person tell me the name and author of a book they can't remember.
Offer to search for "A book by that guy who was on television last week about those two lovers."

A Temporary Receptionist

Spell out a really long name for someone while another line is ringing.
Watch cartoons on my break.
Eat free food while the whole company drinks free beer.
Answer calls from people wanting to ask about "Valve A-4320B6D".
Explain to people that no, I can not just get up and go look for a person.
Explain to people that I'm just a temp and wouldn't be able to recognize a certain person if they walked by.
Tell people calling at 4:59 on Friday the reason that they are getting no answer.
Listen to people introduce themselves, tell the company the're with, explain their WHOLE problem, and THEN figure out they called the wrong number.
Field calls from people wanting to complain to a real live person or else they'll sue the company (and they think their lawyers won't get the machine too???)

A Clerk in a Hospital

Tape over holes in large stacks of paper.
Take paper out of folders, save the folders and throw the papers away.
