Plague
Plague, Mistress of Disease, Poison, and Sickness, Scrouge Goddess
Born to the world of Pria a beautiful little girl, Plague was once
as normal as anyone. In fact, other than her outstanding beauty, she
seemed to possess nothing else that would indicate a particular talent.
She didn't seem especially blessed by the gods, but then, in those
days the gods were pretty much off away from the human populations.
When she was 12 years old, Plague, then known as Sarah, was away
taking fresh baked breads and cakes to a nearby village. Returning
home, she was horrified to discover that everyone she had left behind
was sick and dying, or already dead.
She did her best to nurse them and make them all comfortable. It was
difficult for her since her own parents were among the newly dead,
along with her only brother and sister. Working hard, she made many
a villager comfortable before they met death.
Within two days of her return, all those she had loved and known were
dead. She herself showed no signs of illness, merely exhaustion, so
she gathered what little she could into a cart, hitched up her
family's only horse, tied the cow to the back and set off for the next
village to try to make a new life.
Reaching the village she found work quickly with the baker there, but
within a few short days she was horrified to hear the news that the
sickness had not only claimed her own village, but also the village
to which she had traveled.
Frightened now, Sarah kept to herself wondering if she might in fact
be the link to the two problems. The fates frowned upon her as shortly
thereafter the people of this new village began to sicken and to die.
Instead of playing nurse however, Sarah ran from the village
taking what little she owned and kept running.
It was several years before her fate caught up with her,and by then
she had been responsible for the destruction of no less than 30
villages, and no one could ever count the death toll. The numbers
must have been staggering. When someone who had managed to escape
from at least three of the affected villages noticed that Sarah was
also there, they began to put the pieces of this trail of terror
together.
The frightened villagers quickly became an angry mob. They took Sarah
and burning her hair to her scalp, they decided to brand her so that
no one would ever take her in again. They burned hideous scars onto
her face and arms and upper chest. Then, unhappy that she had lived
through such a treatment, they took a cake knife from her bakery and
tore out her heart.
Satyr arrived too late to save the mortal life of this young girl,
but he did hear her dying curses for this village and those who had
caused this to happen to her. He elevated her to godhood, restored
her lovely dark long hair, and partially restored her face, but not
quite. The one thing he made certain never to restore was her mortal
heart. Instead, he replaced it with a blackened coal from the fire
that had destroyed her beauty to remind her never to trust humans
again, or to have feelings of compassion.
Thus, was born Plague, Mistress of Disease, Poison, and Sickness. Her
first act as a goddess was to inflict all those responsible for her
mortal death with a horrible mutating disease they came to call
leprosy. This was a disease that wasted them with open running sores
causing limbs to fall off in their wake. And to increase their torment
she made certain that the could not die from the illness at all, nor
could they take their own lives. Rather they had to live to an old age.
Her still hideous countenance places her at odds with Lady Magic who
she considers to be beautiful above all other goddesses. She also
despises the Lady Wanonanon, who is an incredibly beautiful fairy
dragon. Both of these goddesses must watch themselves for the
wraith of Plague.
