Kingdom Birthday and War Victory Revel
Antwerp, June 24, 2000
The day dawned hot and humid. A shimmer of heat in the air made the uberites seem to move in slow motion as they erected their tents, sunshades, and banners. It took longer than usual to set up, with those who had completed their duties sitting quietly in the shade, seeming unwilling to break the lethargy of the hot morning. Then a battle cry was raised from Sir Hagen, who chanted “TODAY! TODAY! TODAY!”. The sluggishness was shaken off, and fighters took to the lists with vigor in a ranking tourney. The winner of the ranking tourney was Richter.
After the tourney, there was a lengthy break, in which Court was held. King Siegfried addressed those assembled, commending them on the glorious Victory that Uberheim had over House Three Skulls in the War. He then handed out certificates of merit to those fighters, water-bearers and chiurgeons without whom success would have been naught. Vivats to the flankers Richter, Dankwert, Grok, Fasolt, and Volker, and also to Princess Sif, Xanthia, Lorelei, and Nornir Skuld for their outstanding services. Then Saga entered Court and took lady Urda as her High Priestess of History. Court closed.
Following court, Priestess Urda and Squire Owen fired up a barbecue and fed hamburgers and hotdogs to a hungry populace. Uberites lounged in the shade, awaiting the next event, Thor’s “Wheel of Doom” tourney.
The Wheel of Doom is an amusing tourney in which the contestants must spin a wheel to find out under what circumstances they will take the field. The conditions range from the diabolically difficult to the patently ridiculous. Among the best were “Ode to Odin”, in which contestants must fight with eye-patches and spears, “Shakespearian Tragedy”, where they must score a certain number of hits before the completion of a reading of one of Hamlet’s soliloquies, and “The Peasant’s Revolt”, where the bystanders hurl tennis balls at the contestants as they battle on their knees!
Throughout the whole, Thor offered dubious elixirs of highly suspect content to the contestants. These liquids would either grant a boon or a defect to whomever drank them, but Thor would not tell them which beforehand! Despite good fighting and better sportsmanship throughout the whole by all the fighters, Mime emerged victorious at the end. It was greatly enjoyed by all.
A closing court was held, in which the solemn ceremony of Ascension was completed for Uller. His Asgardian vigil had been held the previous evening, and now he was to be presented with the traditional Mjollnir pendant, which passes from the last Ascended god or goddess to the newest of their ranks.
Syn and Thor bade Uller enter court, and bestowed the hammer upon him, completed his long and arduous journey to godhood. His brothers and sisters stepped forth to greet him, and the kingdom responded with much joy.
Finally, Sir Fafnir gathered all of the eight original members of Uberheim together for the traditional birthday toast. Siegfried, Thor, Hagen, Fafnir, Rudiger, Dankwert, Frey, and Brunnhilde each raised a glass in a moving tribute to each other and to the continued success of the Kingdom
Upon the close of court, the uberites cleaned up the site, and outlurked to eat at Ming Yung, with some further bound for the Blydenburg State Park campsite later that night.
